At the second day of the 5th Assembly of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) held in Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates was re-selected to a seat on the Council for the years 2015 and 2016. Senior Ministers from Japan who are presiding over this year’s Assembly proceedings also welcomed the UAE’s re-selection.

Yoichi Miyazawa, Japanese Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry and Co-President of the Assembly added: "With renewable energy being critical to Japan’s trade and economy and the UAE being a trusted partner, we welcome their continued seat on the IRENA council for 2015 / 16" The UAE permanent representative to IRENA Dr. Thani Al Zeyoudi stated that "As the host country of the agency, and as a pro-active supporter of renewables globally, we are pleased to remain a key council member – this reflects member states appreciation of the UAE’s role and influence in shaping the Agency’s future – it also shows member states recognition of our global role in renewables" The Council is IRENA’s executive governing body consisting of 21 member states with two annual sessions where strategy, financing, work programme and organizational matters are developed.

Yasuhide Nakayama, State Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan and the other Co-President of the Assembly was equally pleased with the results.

"The United Arab Emirates and Japan are strong partners in energy and we look forward to continued cooperation on renewables through our Assembly presidency and the UAE’s continued role on the Council" Adnan Z. Amin, Director-General of IRENA, sees the UAE continuation in the council as a positive development.

"We welcome UAE’s re-selection to the IRENA Council, as they are an active and engaged member of the Agency and have been an essential partner in the efforts to advance the renewable energy agenda around the globe. We look forward to carrying this partnership forward and engaging even more closely with our host country, the UAE, in developing our common vision for a clean, renewable and sustainable future." The first 2015 session of the IRENA council will be held in June in Abu Dhabi.
