Morro Castle

The iconic fortress which guards the entrance to Havana Bay is a crucial Cuban landmark and must visit for history enthusiasts. Built in 1589, whilst Cuba was under the control of Spain, it’s purpose was to defend Havana from any potential attacks on the bay by closing the bay off with an enormous chain. Based at the head of the square which was the site of one of Fidel Castro’s most famous speeches, the Cathedral of Havana has a very special place in many Cuban people’s hearts. Built in 1784, it’s famous for being one of the best examples of Italian Baroque architecture in the world. The cathedral square houses some incredible 18th century homes which we’re occupied by Cuba’s most important before during the British occupation of the city.

Built in the late 19th century the beautiful building houses an array of incredible exhibitions relating to both his life and his most famous works. His death fighting against the Spanish has cemented him as a Cuban legend, with locals often referring to him as an apostle of the revolution and the father of Cuban independence.
