While new innovative drugs have certainly improved outcomes for many cancer patients, spending on cancer drugs has correspondingly increased in recent years, putting a severe burden on patients’ expenses, government’s healthcare expenditure and its resources. According to a recent report by the global Market Research Firm IMARC Group, the global biosimilar market size was estimated to be 2.9 billion dollars last year and it is projected to reach 15.6 billion dollars by 2023, owing to a number of factors such as the patent expiries of a large number of biological drugs, the rise in ageing population and a predicted increase in the number of non-communicable diseases.
