UAE Gains ITU Council Membership

The UAE was elected as a member of the International Telecommunications Union, ITU, Council for the fourth consecutive term.

Member states at the 20th ITU Plenipotentiary Conference today completed the election process for the ITU Council and Radio Regulations Board for the 2019-2022 period. The UAE garnered 164 votes, and was elected as member in the ITU Membership 'Region E - Asia and Australasia', which contains a total of 13 seats. The Conference is currently taking place in Dubai, and will conclude on 16th November.

Member countries alongside of the UAE in the 'Region E' grouping include, Australia, Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Kuwait, Pakistan, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, and Thailand.

Over the years, the UAE has witnessed an increase in the number of votes, reflecting the high level of confidence ITU member countries have in the UAE's telecommunications sector.

The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority, TRA, Director-General Hamad Obaid Al Mansouri, said that the UAE's election to the ITU Council reaffirms the pioneering role played by the nation in shaping the future of the telecommunications sector.

He noted that the UAE is a key player in international forums, and is actively contributing to the development of policies and strategies to make the world a better and safer place, by ensuring security, stability and prosperity globally.

The ITU Council serves as the governing body of ITU between Plenipotentiary Conferences, which take place every four years. It ensures oversight of the Union's activities, policies and strategies, manages Working Groups on specific topics set up by Plenipotentiary Conferences or by the Council itself, and prepares the draft ITU Strategic and Financial Plans for presentation to the Plenipotentiary.
