In addition to the hundreds of thousands of books on display at the fair, the rich parallel programme includes a large number of cultural and intellectual activities, carried out by tens of renowned local, Arabic, and international novelists, journalists, intellectuals, artists, and chefs.

The announcement was made during a press conference held at the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and attended by HE Abdullah Bin Mohammed Al Owais, Chairman of the Department of Culture and Information in Sharjah; HE Ahmed bin Rakkad Al Ameri, SIBF Director; HE Abdulaziz Taryam, CEO advisor and Director General of Etisalat in the Northern Emirates; Dr Khalid Al Midfa, Director General of Sharjah Media Corporation; and Helen Konstantopoulos, Managing Director at International New York Times.

Al Owais indicated that this year's edition of SIBF is significant in that it coincides with the celebrations of Sharjah as a Capital of Islamic Culture, highlighting the selection of Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) as a guest of honor for this year's edition, in appreciation of its pioneering role in spreading the values and culture of Islam on the international stage. Al Owais also highlighted the selection of ICESCO Director-General HE Dr. Abdulaziz bin Othman Al-Tuwaijri as this year’s Cultural Figure, in appreciation of his achievements and intellectual contributions to the Arab and Islamic worlds.

Al Owais concluded his speech by thanking the sponsors and partners for their support, including Etisalat (official sponsor), Sharjah Media Corporation (media sponsor), Alarabiya Channel (media sponsor), the International New York Times (strategic partner), and Expo Sharjah Center (Strategic Partner).

On his part, HE Ahmed bin Rakkad Al Ameri, SIBF Director, emphasized that SIBF, now in its 33rd year of giving to the society, and unlimited support to books, authors, and the whole books industry, has become, thanks to the directions graciously extended by His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Muhamad Al-Qasimi, an integrated cultural project, through which Sharjah celebrates the written word, and takes part in sculpting the future, while at the same time enhancing cultural and civilized dialogue between the world's nations.
