Rare Hole In The Eyes Hampers A Young Emiratis Vision

A 14-year old Emirati, Mr. Saeed Salim Al Dhuhouri, suffered from a rare visual condition which caused blurring vision in both eyes. Research shows that this condition affects 3 in every 1000 individuals over the age of 60 years.
When the young Emirati started complaining about blurred vision, the family was very alarmed. “We were disheartened and could not believe that our own child is suffering from such problem. It was very frustrating not knowing what his condition is or whether it could be treated or not,” commented the mother of the local teen. “We have visited several hospitals and have spoken to different health professionals, but to no avail. Until one day, we took our boy to Burjeel Hospital.  That’s when we finally started getting some answers.”

“Mr. Saeed’s condition points to many possibilities. We had to run series of tests to check the blood flow in his eyes and to gage the capability of his retina. All tests revealed a hole in the center of the retina.  As soon we had clear diagnosis, we knew we had to act fast.  Otherwise, the condition might aggravate further, until the retina is torn,” said Dr. Madhav Rao, Consultant Ophthalmologist / Vitreo-Retinal Surgeon at the Burjeel Hospital in Abu Dhabi.

Dr. Rao says the young Emirati’s condition is highly complicated that it is necessary to do series of eye surgeries. “After we have clear diagnosis of his condition, we prepared him for several complicated eye surgeries and started the treatment. After 6 weeks of surgeries and treatment, Mr. Saeed showed significant improvement in his vision. He responded well to the therapy and is now back doing his regular teenage activities.”

“I was so frightened when I was not able to see clearly. I thought, in a matter of time, I will go blind. But with the help of Dr. Rao, I am back enjoying countless activities with my family and friends,” said Mr. Saeed.

Mr. Saeed’s father could not have been happier, “I am grateful that my son’s case was handled extremely well by the team of medical experts at Burjeel Hospital. There are no words to express our gratitude seeing our son enjoying his life to the fullest.”

“Mr. Saeed’s case is truly an inspiration for Burjeel Hospital. Our commitment to clinical excellence speaks volumes of our ceaseless efforts to serve the community and give them only the best in healthcare delivery.  But more than our dedication to remarkable medical results, we serve our Guests with a full heart. We sincerely care for their well-being so they may enjoy their lives to the fullest,” said Mr. Clancey Po, CEO, Burjeel Hospital Abu Dhabi.
