Sixth International Date Palm Conference To Discuss New Dimensions And Challenges For Sustainable Date Palm Production

Date palm researchers, growers, traders, agro-industrialists, nutrition and health specialists, biotechnologists, regulators and consumers as well as suppliers of packages, fertilisers, planting material and farm equipment will gather in the UAE capital next month for the Sixth International Date Palm Conference under the theme "New Dimensions and Challenges for Sustainable Date Palm Production."

The Sixth International Date Palm Conference provides a forum for updating on current issues important to this industry as well as information on new products and services. Participants from the public and private sectors will deal with the aspects of the date palm from producers through consumers all around the world.

Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister for Tolerance and President of the Award’s Board of Trustees, said the conference will be convened as the UAE is celebrating Year of Zayed in 2018 to inspire the significant role and efforts made by the founding father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan, in the nation's agricultural revolution and for establishing a solid agricultural infrastructure that helped the country to boost food security.

Sheikh Nahyan thanked President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan for his kind patronage of the conference and for his support and encouragement for scientific research as an enabler of sustainable development.

''His Highness' care for the date palm sector and agricultural innovation represents an important socio-economic and heritage value in the nation's development,'' he added.

Organised from 19th to 21st March, 2018, by the Khalifa International Award for Date Palm and Agricultural Innovation, in partnership with UAE University, Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority, Al Foah Company, International Centre for Biosaline Agriculture, the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation, Date Palm Global Network, Date Palm Friends Society and International Centre for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas, the international conference will assemble a powerful line of 250 date palm scientists, experts, and senior officials from 35 countries to exchange experiences.

Organisers say that under the leadership of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed there are continual efforts to increase UAE’s date palm productivity, to make better use of the date palm industry and produce an agricultural leap that will change the face of the UAE desert.

According to organisers, the three-day international agricultural gathering aims to serve as a platform for emerging scientific and commercial knowledge as well as current and future challenges regionally and globally in date palm production, propagation, protection and marketing.
