Abu Dhabi in new tourism push

Building on the momentum of Abu Dhabi’s participation a fortnight ago in South Asia’s foremost travel fair, the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, DCT Abu Dhabi, will expand its footprint tomorrow to South India which sends the largest number of expatriates and visitors to the UAE.

"Abu Dhabi Week," which will open in the 60,000-capacity Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kochi on Friday evening is expected to give a new push to the 11 per cent increase in the number of Indians who stayed in the emirate’s hotels last year.

Anticipating a large flow of visitors to the three-day event in view of the historic, migratory and cultural affinity between Kerala and the Gulf, the organisers have chosen India’s fourth largest stadium by capacity for the Kochi round of Abu Dhabi Week.

Last fortnight, 14 destination partners, tour operators and public sector travel-related entities from Abu Dhabi had successfully participated in the South Asian Travel and Tourism Exhibition, SATTE, in New Delhi, drawing record crowds to their pavilion within the first few hours of the show’s opening.

According to Bejan Dinshaw, Country Manager in India for DCT Abu Dhabi, the show in Kochi will be a significantly expanded version of the emirate’s participation in SATTE, especially offering visitors a chance to savour the culinary delicacies of Abu Dhabi with Emirati chefs flown into Kerala in view of the sprawling venue.

Experiences of adventure sports, life-like encounters of Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, Desert Safari, and a glimpse of the Louvre Abu Dhabi will be on offer at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.

"For the first time visitors will be able to get their hands on a Ferrari, and experience the accompanying adrenaline rush while riding in it. Adding to that, Abu Dhabi Week will also present a live recreation of the Al Ain Palace and the Al Dhafra Region, replete with sand, Bedouin tents, safari jeeps and traditional Arabic seating and lighting," according to a press release issued by the Department.

The release quoted Mubarak Al Nuaimi, Director for Promotions and Overseas Offices at DCT Abu Dhabi, as saying that "owing to the growing levels of disposable income in the hands of Indian travellers, we believe that India is a crucial market with a potential to expand the tourism inflow in Abu Dhabi."

He added: "It therefore becomes imperative to educate people about everything that Abu Dhabi has to offer and re-shape notions regarding its cost heaviness. The Abu Dhabi Week strives to amplify not only the splendour of Abu Dhabi but also highlight its pocket-friendliness in terms of family vacations, solo travels, film shoots, trade and business, and destination weddings, among others."

Dinshaw said this year represented Abu Dhabi’s participation in SATTE for six years in a row. "Tourism has become a force in developing relations between the two regions and has stimulated both economies. Abu Dhabi welcomed 320,000 Indian hotel guests last year. Etihad Airways and Jet Airways operate 282 flights a week, from 13 Indian destinations, including Kochi. With all these factors at play, more and more Indian tourists have been setting their sights on Abu Dhabi for their next holiday destination."

The event opening tomorrow is called Abu Dhabi Week because from Kochi the show will move to Calcutta the following weekend for a further three days. In both cities, visitors will have a chance to win attractive prizes, listen to musical performances and view Abu Dhabi’s skyline and landscape through 3D maps.
