Abu Dhabi International Book Fair’s 28th Edition Presents A Unique Cultural Programme


Featuring a series of seminars discussing the legacy of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and his vision for the cultural landscape of the UAE










 Organised by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi), the 28th edition of the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair(ADIBF) will feature a unique cultural programme exploring the evolution of the cultural scene in the UAE through a series of panel discussions, presentations and workshop sessions.

In celebration of the Year of Zayed, the fair will explore the legacy of the late founding father of the UAE, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, through a curated programme of talks centred on his core values. The first talk entitled Zayed, the Nation-building Leader - a major seminar will discuss the pivotal themes of the development of the country, the region, and the importance of women empowerment.

The second talk, entitled The Late Sheikh Zayed’s poetry and his influence on poets, will highlight Sheikh Zayed’s own literary prowess and the themes of his poems. The third talk, Cultural development in the era of Zayed: vision and achievements, will explore the UAE’s cultural development, starting with Sheikh Zayed’s vision. The last talk, Zayed: aspects of leadership and future-oriented vision, will discuss the prime aspects of his principles and visionary perspective that positioned the UAE today at the forefront of pioneering countries around the world.

This year's edition of Abu Dhabi International Book Fair celebrates Poland as the Guest of Honour, providing an opportunity to explore the cultural wealth of Poland, introducing audiences to the 1,000-year history of Polish literature. These works, authored by Polish writers over the centuries, reflect the stages of prosperity and decline in the ancient history of Poland.

The Polish pavilion features the latest trends in Polish literature, which has a large readership inside and outside Poland, most of which is in Europe. The pavilion will also highlight the history of Muslims in Poland, which dates back to the 16thcentury. Guests will have the opportunity to meet Polish authors throughout the book fair and learn more about the legacy of literature in Poland.

ADIBF will also provide its visitors with the opportunity to explore the timeless classic works of 19th century Polish literature, as well as the recent literary masterpieces written by Polish Nobel laureates, from the epic literature of Henryk Sienkiewicz, and the poetry of Czesław Miłosz, to the modern works of Wisława Szymborska. The book fair will also be a chance to learn about Polish traditions in the field of children's literature.

Additionally, the Show Kitchen programme at ADBIF will highlight Polish cuisine. Famous chefs from Poland will share delectable recipes, where food lovers can enjoy an extraordinary culinary experience by cooking along with the chefs through live cooking demonstrations. 

The cultural programme at ADBIF includes an opportunity for guests to meet prominent intellectuals such as the Chairman of the Jury at the International Prize for Arabic Fiction (IPAF), the winners of the short-listed IPAF prize, as well as the opportunity to have an open meeting with the winners of the eminent Sheikh Zayed Book Award.

Abu Dhabi International Book Fair 2018 will also address the topic of cultural interaction, highlighting in particular the importance of bringing together cultures through literary readings. The fair presents a series of symposiums including The Ibn Battuta Award for Travel Literature, sponsored by the Emirati poet Mohammed Ahmed bin Khalifa Al Suwaidi. Other symposiums that will be presented at the fair include: Travellers as cultural ambassadors: self-discovery and the other, Abu Khalil Al Qabbani through his trip to USA, Travel books in translation, The cognitive horizon and spiritual aspirations in pilgrimage travels.

ADIBF, running from 25 April to 1 May 2018 at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC), will include a series of seminars addressing subjects and issues in the field of translation. Taking into consideration the crucial role translation plays in building bridges between civilisations and nations, developing the capacities of young translators, and supporting the next generation to continue the march to cultural progress.
