Zakat Fund Signs a MoU with the TRA

The Zakat Fund has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the UAE Computer Emergency Response Team (aeCERT) of the UAE Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) at the Zakat Fund headquarters in Abu Dhabi.

The MoU is related to coordinating and supporting the response to cyber security incidents, where the aeCERT will act as a central point of contact for reporting cyber security incidents; will deliver analysis of global and specific cyber security threats; will provide coordination and advisory services on mitigating cyber security risks; and will deliver training, education and advisory services, in order to assist in the mitigation of cyber security risks.

The MoU was signed by H.E. Abdullah Bin Aqida Al Muhairi, Secretary General of the Zakat Fund, and H.E. Mohamed Nasser Al Ghanim, TRA Director General.

The importance of this MoU is related to the fact that protecting the confidentiality of information within the great Internet revolution is vital and crucial, based on the action and strategic plans of the Zakat Fund to establish strategic relations with federal and local institutes, in addition to building self capabilities.

The aeCERT, however, works to ensure a safer cyber security environment for the cyber users of the UAE.

Following the signing ceremony, H.E. Abdullah Bin Aqida Al Muhairi stated that "the Zakat Fund is pleased to cooperate with the UAE-TRA in the field of Information Technology (IT) security and protection, where this world has not only become a global village, but rather within the reach of an individual capable of just pressing a button on the Internet. Hence, it has become vital for the institutions to protect their IT security just to prevent the manipulation and misuse of their information." Al Muhairi pointed out that "charity and social work needs privacy, especially for the information and documents we possess, to preserve the privacy and confidentiality of the families and the needy people we support, as well as to protect the privacy of the benevolent businessmen, corporations and institutions." Al Muhairi ensured that "the Zakat Fund is always eager to invest in the technological developments, where the Fund encompasses distinguished electronic services." In his turn, H.E. Mohamed Nasser Al Ghanim expressed the interest of the TRA in representing the aeCERT and signing this MoU with the Zakat Fund, stressing on the importance of signing this MoU that is considered within the basic tasks in implementing the TRA strategy "to support and provide the Zakat Fund with special services to improve the Fund’s IT infrastructure security through the aeCERT’s providing consultancy, monitoring and incident response, and research and analysis." Al Ghanim clarified that "the aeCERT is one of the TRA initiatives that supports our strategy, which includes supporting a safe and smooth cyberspace in the UAE, where the TRA has established this initiative to improve the standards and practices of information security and to protect the UAE IT infrastructure from Internet incidents and threats." The aeCERT objectives are to enhance the cyber security law and assist in the creation of new laws; to enhance information security awareness across the UAE; to build national expertise in information security, incident management and computer forensics; to provide a central trusted point of contact for cyber security incident reporting in the UAE; to establish a national center to disseminate information about threats, vulnerabilities, and cyber security incidents; to foster the establishment of and provide assistance to sector-based Computer Security Incidents Response Teams (CSIRTs); to coordinate with domestic and international CSIRTs and related organizations; and to become an active member of recognized security organizations and forums.

This MoU is one within a series of agreements that the Zakat Fund is conducting to provide better services for the Zakat Duty in the UAE.
