The 1st International Pain Management Conference is set to take place from the 27th to the 29th of October 2009 at the Al Ain Intercontinental Hotel. The conference is organized by the multidisciplinary comprehensive pain management committee at Tawam Hospital as an initiative to improve pain care in the region and surrounding countries.

The conference will comprise of two days of educational sessions (held at the hotel) together with the exhibit and hands-on workshops (held at Faculty of Medicine and Health Science) on new interventional and medical techniques for the management of pain. There will be a comprehensive program presenting the very latest developments in all areas and disciplines in the field of Pain Medicine.

“This conference presents a global forum at which all those involved in pain management can learn from renowned scientists, researchers, academics and professionals to discuss treatment options and overcome the challenge of pain problems and promote healthcare providers to stop the suffering and say NO to pain,” said Riad Abdelkarim, Scientific Committee Chairman, CMO-A Tawam Hospital.

Pain management is a vital part of any therapeutic process and involves several practices and methods that range from holistic, pharmacological, topical or a combination of therapies for specific types of pain. Effective pain management includes interventional procedures, medication management, physical therapy or chiropractic therapy, psychological counselling and support, acupuncture and other alternative therapies; as well as referral to other medical specialists.

Ultimately pain management determines the exact source of the pain and the most effective treatment. To arrive at this point, doctors and therapists have to consider the history of the pain, its intensity, duration, aggravating and relieving conditions, and parts of the body involved in causing the pain. For a part of the body to cause pain, it must have a nerve supply, be susceptible to injury, and the activation or movement of that body part should cause pain.

Tawam Hospital, in affiliation with John Hopkins Medicine, organized this conference to present a global forum for all healthcare professionals involved in pain management to learn from renowned scientists, researchers, academics and professionals in the field.

Dr. Rasha S. Jabri is Division Head of the Pain Medicine Section at the Anesthesiology Department at Tawam Hospital and the Chairman of the Comprehensive Pain Management Program at Tawam Hospital said “This is a unique opportunity for us to advance in pain management by promoting the exchange of current scientific knowledge and new strategies in order to overcome the difficult challenges and provide excellent care for those suffering from pain.

“Doctors, nurses, physiotherapists and other care providers will have the opportunity to hear and meet the distinguished keynote speakers in pain medicine and share their experiences from all over the world,” she continued.

The key objective of the conference is discussing the importance of comprehensive multidisciplinary approaches to pain. It will also review pharmacologic options and interventional techniques in pain treatment, as well as new technologies in the field. It will also examine complementary and physical therapy modalities in treating pain. The conference will provide a platform to develop strategies in treating acute, chronic and malignant pain.

The distress of pain can cripple patients, especially when it is brought on by diseases that require aggressive treatment. Medical practitioners are in the business to ease the pain and suffering, the by-products of several conditions. Their responsibilities extend beyond curing illnesses but also controlling the damage they can leave behind. Through their efforts to improve therapies and innovative technology doctors are taking an active approach to pain management. “We are determined to make a difference and give our patients the peace of mind, knowing that we will enlist our best talent to fight against pain,” said Dr. Jabri.

Tawam is owned and operated by SEHA, the Abu Dhabi Health Services Company, which is responsible for the curative activities of all the public hospitals and clinics in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
