Fitting Finale To F1 Powerboat Championship


Sharjah Grand Prix Success To Help Tourism: Al Noman










The UIM F1H20 World Powerboat Championship hosted by Sharjah concluded on an exciting note and achieved positive results by attracting large numbers of visitors from across the country and the region to the emirate, HE Mohamed Ali Al Noman, Chairman Development Authority Sharjah Commerce and Tourism said today.

“More than 75,000 spectators watched the grand race in Khalid Lagoon this weekend. It once again confirms the importance of this grand sporting spectacle in the emirate’s calendar,” he added.

The SCTDA Chairman said that every year thousands of Sharjah and UAE residents and international visitors keep their date with the international Formula 1 Powerboat Championship, the Sharjah Grand Prix, held in December. The final round of the World Powerboat Championship, hosted by Sharjah for the 13th consecutive year, is considered crucial and is followed by motorsport enthusiasts from around the world.

The SCTDA Chairman thanked His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qassimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah for the leadership and guidance and His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed bin Sultan Al Qassimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Sharjah for his continuous patronage and support.

Al Noman also lauded the excellent cooperation between the Sharjah government departments and private sector during the international tournament. The hard work and logistical and technical support provided by everyone concerned contributed to the success of the Sharjah Grand Prix, he added.

Meanwhile Nicolo Di San Germano, global promoter for the UIM F1 H20 World Powerboat Championship, too praised the smooth and outstanding organisation of the tournament in Sharjah once again. He said that having witnessed the powerboat racing events around the world he thought Sharjah was one of the best in terms of arrangements and support offered by the hosts and local authorities.

The UIM F1H20 World Championship, held on December 6-7 December was flagged off and witnessed by His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Sharjah flagged off. The Crown Prince later feted the winners. The local hero Abu Dhabi’s Thani Al Qamzi earned himself the first place in Sharjah Grand Prix and the third position in the final round of the UIM World Championship. The Italian Alex Carrella was crowned the world champion for 2012.

With the curtain coming down on the Sharjah Grand Prix, the spotlight has shifted to the Sharjah Water Festival 2012 that opens on December 12 at Al Majaz Park next to Khalid Lagoon. The SCTDA is making arrangements and giving final touches to the venue, which promises to bring loads of fun and games for both the young and old.

On the offer are internationally renowned Russian Circus on Water, Sinbad’s Adventures, Burmese Puppet Shows, Ohmies American musical and theatre performances etc., besides a lot of other regular features. Meanwhile the Sharjah Water Festival mascot Mouj met and interacted with thousands of students from the emirate’s schools at the Cultural Palace inviting them to join the fun at Al Majaz Park once again.
