Second Annual World Future Energy Summit In Abu Dhabi On Pace To Break Own Records


A Record Number Of Heads Of State, Business Leaders, Politicians, Investors And Exhibitors From Around The World Have Confirmed Plans To Participate In The Second Annual World Future Energy Summit From 19-21 January 2009










A record number of heads of state, business leaders, politicians, investors and exhibitors from around the world have confirmed plans to participate in the second annual World Future Energy Summit from 19-21 January 2009. The Summit will bring together the largest gathering of people and companies with solutions to achieve world targets for the use of renewable energy in commercial and domestic applications. As in 2008, the debate is expected to be very strong with a large number of top government officials, heads of state, heads of large international organisations, leading environmentalists and global investors sharing the stage. “In 2009, we have more expert speakers, more specialist exhibitors, more support from international sponsors and thousands of people already signed up to attend. This event has ignited the imagination of the world” says Richard Hease, Chairman of Turret Middle East, organisers of the Summit. The World Future Energy Summit was founded by Masdar, the Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company, which is Abu Dhabi’s multi-faceted, multi-billion dollar investment in the development and commercialization of innovative technologies in renewable, alternative and sustainable energies as well as sustainable design. Masdar CEO, Dr. Sultan Al Jaber says, “We are proud to continue the tradition of hosting some of the world’s leading future energy experts to discuss the need for alternative energy solutions. We are also pleased to inaugurate the first Zayed Future Energy Prize, an award designed to reward innovators and inventors in the field of renewable energy.” The Conference A wide range of commercial and technical sessions presented by the world’s leading experts in their field are confirmed for the January Summit. Amongst the keynote addresses on 19 January will be His Royal Highness Prince Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands, Prince of Orange and Jens Stoltenberg, Prime Minister of Norway. In addition, other notable keynotes include: Dr. Rajendra Pachauri, Nobel Laureate, Chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and Zayed Future Energy Prize Jury Chairman; Andris Piebalgs, Commissioner for Energy at European Commission who has set ambitious targets for the European Union to meet by 2012; Susan Hockfield, President of Massachusetts Institute of Techonlogy; Professor Hermann Requardt, CTO at Siemens; Preston Chiaro from Rio Tinto; and Professor Lord Stern, who will provide with his expert opinion on the economics of climate change. In our technical streams, Björn Stigson, President, World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) will be amongst those discussing energy efficiency and carbon. Our solar thermal stream is packed with the best in the business: Peter Gutman from Standard Chartered; Juergen Beigel, of Solar Millennium; Christopher Regan at Endesa; Ignacio Cuenca from Iberdrola and Michael Geyer, Abengoa Solar S.A. There will also be several speakers focusing on wind power solutions including, Ditlev Engel, CEO of Vestas; Steve Sawyer at the Global Wind Energy Council;, Dr. Frank Mastiaux, CEO of E.ON Climate & Renewables; and Lassi Noponen, Executive Chairman of Winwind. Biofuels sees a strong Brazilian contingent coming to the platform with Eduardo Leao de Sousa, Executive Director of UNICA (Brazilian Sugarcane Producers’ Union) and José Carlos Aguilera, Director-President at BrasilEcodiesel. As finance plays a crucial role in this young industry; for end-to-end investment finance, Marcel Brenninkmeijer, Founder and Chairman, Good Energies; Blythe Masters, Managing Director Commodities at JP Morgan; John Cavalier, Partner of Hudson Capital Management; and Nicholas Parker at Cleantech Group will also be speaking. The Exhibition With over 15,000 attendees expected to attend in 2009, the Summit will again be the largest meeting of influential figures within the renewable energy industry.
