Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) Participate in Geographic Information System (GIS) Day

Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) Will Showcase How Geographic Information System (GIS) Can Help Abu Dhabi Manage And Protect The Environment

The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) participated in Abu Dhabi’s first celebration of Geographic Information System (GIS) Day, organized by Abu Dhabi Systems and Information Committee (ADSIC) on November 19, 2008 at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Center. EAD will showcase how GIS can help Abu Dhabi manage and protect the environment. “At EAD, we have used GIS technology as a critical support tool to make environmental data clearer to decision makers,” said Entesar Al Hosani, Manager, Environmental Information Management Department, EAD. Al Hosani noted that GIS technology has been an integral part of EAD since its inception. Back in 1994, EAD’s leaders recognized the need for GIS and immediately recruited a GIS Manager. In 2007, EAD was awarded the Excellence in GIS Implementation Award by GISTEC. This award is given to organizations that foster innovation and experimentation in the area of GIS implementation. Environmental Database In the year 2000, EAD initiated the development of the Environmental Database as a resource to manage environmental data across the organization. This effort was extended in 2001 to promote a broader data sharing approach among all environmental stakeholders in Abu Dhabi. This initiative was to later influence the formation of the AD-SDI initiative that exists today. EAD GeoPortal EAD established a web-based, publicly accessible GeoPortal www.geoportal.ae/portal that includes a catalog of the current data holdings, and a map viewer that allows users to look at the available information. The Portal currently features over 140 map services depicting environmental topics covering all of Abu Dhabi Emirate. This GeoPortal will be linked to the ADSIC SDCC GeoPortal as one node in an eventual network of interoperable nodes and will be expanded over time to ensure access to the most up to date and accurate information. Abu Dhabi Global Environmental Data Initiative (AGEDI) AGEDI is an initiative of the UAE Government that is being facilitated by EAD to demonstrate to the world the country’s commitment to the environment, to ensure that quality data for the UAE would be available for international environmental sustainability assessments, and to promote closing the “digital divide” of the availability of high quality environmental data in both developed and developing countries. The initiative was first committed to the world at the United Nations World Summit for Sustainable Development. West Asia Map Server EAD partnered with UNEP to host the West Asia Map Server. This web-based system provides a map interface for accessing and viewing data that is being provided by stakeholder throughout the West Asia Region, as part of the UNEP Global Environmental Outlook.
