UAE Highlights 4IR Regulations On World Standards Day

The number of UAE and Gulf standards approved in the UAE have amounted to 23,472 standards and technical regulations up until 2018. These measures are distributed across economic, knowledge and development sectors, from health and management information systems, through to construction, mechanics, electricity, and oil and gas, textiles, among others, the Emirates Authority for Standardisation and Metrology, ESMA, has revealed.

The UAE, along with other countries, celebrates World Standards Day, which falls on 14th October annually, with this year's theme entitled, 'International Standards and the Fourth Industrial Revolution'.

The UAE Strategy for the Fourth Industrial Revolution was established a year ago as part of the annual government meetings in Abu Dhabi, said Abdulla Al Maeeni, ESMA Director-General.

According to Al Maeeni, the Authority promotes the 'quality of life' concept in the UAE, in a context that is in line with the government's directives and strategies, ensuring the integration of the innovative technologies.

The choice of this year's World Standards Day slogan, and its association with the associated with the Fourth Industrial Revolution, 4IR, is directly in line with the UAE's strategy, which seeks to transform the country into an international hub for 4IR, he added.

As part of its contribution to the UAE 4IR strategy, ESMA has adopted artificial intelligence systems, including the Emergency Call System, Ecall, in a bid to provide intelligent and interactive government services. In April 2018, the UAE Cabinet adopted the technical regulations for the system, as recommended by ESMA. Ecall is now mandatory in all vehicles, and aims to help reduce the response time for vehicles hit by traffic accidents by up to 40 percent. The system is a first of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa region, and the second globally after the experience of the European Union.
