Double Success For KIZAD At FDI Global Free Zone Awards 2018

KIZAD picks up accolades in both the specialism and bespoke categories

Khalifa Industrial Zone Abu Dhabi (KIZAD) has won two accolades in this year’s fDi Global Free Zone of the Year Awards, reinforcing its position as one of the region’s leading industrial and free zone hubs.

The awards scheme is run by fDi magazine, part of the Financial Times, and recognises the most promising free zones around the world.

KIZAD, one of the largest industrial zones in the Middle East and a subsidiary of Abu Dhabi Ports, won a Specialism Award for Construction as well as a Bespoke Award for a number of initiatives, including its smart strategy and its ongoing investments in infrastructure development, connectivity, sustainability and pioneering services and solutions.

Captain Mohamed Juma Al Shamisi, Group CEO of Abu Dhabi Ports, said: “Our success at the fDi Global Free Zone of the Year Awards 2018 in two important categories reflects not only our commitment to transforming Abu Dhabi’s maritime infrastructure but also to attracting foreign direct investment to the Emirate, helping to grow and diversify the economy.”

Samir Chaturvedi, CEO, Khalifa Industrial Zone Abu Dhabi (KIZAD), said: “These awards are a proud moment for KIZAD as we continue to build a thriving industrial, manufacturing and logistics ecosystem that not only ensures our existing tenants can grow but also acts as a magnet for other firms around the world looking to explore the MENA market.”

In evaluating KIZAD’s submission, fDi magazine considered the industrial zone’s achievements this year, which included signing agreements with 15 Chinese companies to invest $1 billion in the Khalifa Port Free Trade Zone (KPFTZ) and establishing an in-house China desk, which is staffed with Chinese nationals who can communicate effectively with Chinese-based investors.

In addition, KIZAD announced earlier this year, the launch of KIZAD Logistics City and KIZAD Construction City. There are plans to expand the latter as part of the KIZAD Area B expansion, which will see the addition of 84 square kilometres for commercial, industrial, warehousing, accommodation and community facilities. The industrial zone has also upgraded almost 14 kilometres of roads and utilities to boost the its connectivity and to support new investors in heavy and general industries, logistics, port companies and full integration with Khalifa Port. The zone also boasts a sea water cooling and desalination system, which supports heavy industry and ensures water pumped back to sea is fully cooled and does not harm marine life.

The awards highlight the ongoing success and growth of KIZAD, which last year saw total tenant occupied space increase by 27%, while the total number of people working within the hub leapt by 15%. KIZAD is now home to more than 200 tenants and over USD 17.5 billion in total investments.
