NCEMA Forum To Highlight Best Practices In Crisis And Emergency Management

Internationally renowned experts to brief CEMC 2010 on topics such as pre-hospital care, vaccination, terrorism, search & rescue and cyber security

The pressing need for integrating emergency response into national security and the healthcare challenges raised by the outbreak of H1N1 will be the major focus of the second annual Crisis and Emergency Management Conference (CEMC 2010) to be held in Abu Dhabi in January 2010.

The three-day conference, organised by the National Crisis and Emergency Management Authority (NCEMA), in association with the National Centre of Meteorology & Seismology, Critical National Infrastructure Authority, Telecommunications Regulatory Authority, Health Authority – Abu Dhabi, Dubai Customs and the Emirates Centre for Strategic Studies and Research will be held from the 11th to the 13th of January at the ECSSR Auditorium in Abu Dhabi.

CEMC 2010 will feature an exclusive list of guest speakers known internationally for their expertise in handling existing as well as emerging public health and national security issues. Together, these experts will highlight the best means of managing pandemic threats like H1N1 and the national security perspective of increasing global commerce and travel.

The conference is a joint initiative of His Highness Sheikh Hazza’ Bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, National Security Advisor and Board Chairman of NCEMA, His Highness Sheikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Presidential Affairs, and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the National Centre of Meteorology & Seismology, and His Excellency Staff Brigadier Pilot Sheikh Ahmed Bin Tahnoon Al-Nahyan, Chairman of the Critical National Infrastructure Authority (CNIA).

“Recent years have seen epidemics and calamities returning in different forms to challenge peace and progress. H1N1 and the ensuing panic showed that even advanced healthcare systems are vulnerable in the absence of constant vigil,” said Mohammed Khalfan Al-Romaithy, General Manager of NCEMA.

“The Crisis and Emergency Management Conference is part of our continuing efforts to integrate such constant vigil into our national character by educating all concerned, especially the public, on the factors compromising their health, safety and security so that they can handle crises with confidence,” added Al-Romaithy.

Major topics covered by CMCE 2010 include emergency management programmes in pre-hospital care, vaccination, trauma care, disaster control, search & rescue and cyber security. The conference will also have two workshops – on ‘Business Continuity (Government Performance)’ and ‘Hostage Negotiation based on the US Model’.

As part of the ongoing preparations for CEMC 2010 NCEMA organised a public forum today at the ECSSR Auditorium to build awareness on crisis management and the appropriate public conduct during emergency situations. Dr Keiji Fukuda, Special Advisor on Pandemic Influenza to the Director-General of the World Health Organisation (WHO) addressed the forum on the prevention and treatment of H1N1 influenza at the forum.

Students from Al Buteen School, Abu Dhabi also joined the forum, presenting an operetta titled ‘The Civil Society’ in honour of the Father of the Nation, His Highness Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan. The operetta, intended to send the message of unity and social consciousness, was organised by the Abu Dhabi Education council as a tribute to Her Highness Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak.
