DoT To Provide Free Transport For 2009 FIFA Club World Cup

The Department of Transport (DoT), announced that it will provide 100 state-of-the-art buses to transport football fans for free during the 2009 FIFA Club World Cup, which is being held in Abu Dhabi from 9th- 19th December.

The free bus service will be implemented on match days and will take fans from the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC) and Al Mushrif Park to and from Zayed Sport City and Mohammed Bin Zayed Stadiums. In addition to the buses, the DoT is also providing 200 specially branded taxis, which will be dedicated to providing transportation options to fans attending matches.

HE Eng. Khalid Mohamed Hashim, Executive Director of the Land Transport Sector, Department of Transport, said: "The FIFA Club World Cup 2009 is one of the leading international football competitions and as such will attract huge numbers of local, regional and international fans to Abu Dhabi. Therefore, it is important that they are offered easy and affordable transportation options in getting to and from the matches." "Following our successful experience in providing a similar event during the inaugural Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, we believe that a dedicated transportation service, especially one that is free, is welcomed by spectators and is a major factor in the success of these major events. We hope that our support will help football fans enjoy the live excitement of this competition", he added.

In addition to providing free transportation during the competition, the DoT is also planning to reemploy its previously launched initiative for managing accidents and vehicle break-downs on the emirate’s highways. This initiative was launched last month during F1 Grand Prix, in cooperation with the General Headquarters for Abu Dhabi Police, and it success was welcomed by both residents and visitors of Abu Dhabi as it helped sustain smooth and uninterrupted traffic flow throughout the Capital.
