Sharjah Museums Department To Host ’Be An Archaeologist’ On Dec. 19


- Highlights culture of Mleiha, one of the most important archeological sites










Sharjah Museums Department (SMD) is organizing a ‘Be An Archaeologist’ educational programme and hosting a gallery talk for adults on archeology – Stories from the Mleiha Culture - on Dec. 19 at Sharjah Archeology Museum.

‘Be An Archaeologist’ will commence from 11 am and families will have the opportunity to dig and document artefacts at the Sharjah Archeology Museum. The gallery talk will be held at 5 pm and led by Mr Eisa Abbas Yousef, Supervisor of Archaeological Surveys and Excavations, Directorate of Antiquities, Sharjah Department of Culture and Information.

The two programmes, organized by the Interpretation and Education Department of SMD, highlight Sharjah Museum Department’s commitment to strengthen all aspects of the region’s culture through community events.

Manal Ataya, Director General of Sharjah Museums Department said: “Archeology is the science of our past, and highlights the region’s ancient culture. Archeological excavations have provided invaluable insights into how human being lived, which is of key importance in chronicling our anthropology. The gallery talk, which specifically addresses the archeology in Mleiha, one of the most important sites in Arabia, highlight our objective of involving the larger public in our activities.”

The ‘Be An Archaeologist’ will be held for about one-and-a-half hours and the discussions will be offered both in Arabic and English. It is free for children between 6 to 11 years of age and their parents and caretakers, and seats are limited to only 25 including adults and children on a first come first served basis.

Stories from the Mleiha gallery talk is part of the series for adult programmes, and will shed more light on the inscriptions in Al Masnad script that were found at the Mleiha site. “These sites are of immense value in recording the history of the region as they provide insights on places, people and other aspects of living. This is of immense value to modern historians. The Mleiha excavations are currently on display at Sharjah Museums,” added Ataya.

Mr Eisa Abbas Yousef is an archaeological researcher and has published a book entitled "The Archaeological Sites in the UAE". He has participated in many international forums and workshops. He also works on local archaeological research striving to raise awareness about archaeology by lecturing in governmental and educational institutions.

Sharjah Museums Department undertakes regular activities to promote the various cultural facets of the Emirate. The family programmes are part of a series created by the Department’s Interpretation & Education section.
