Rafael Nadal Wins Abu Dhabi Championship

The Spaniard won the first set in a tie-break. And despite some resistance as Soderling came from 4-2 down to tie at 4-4 in the second set, Nadal’s power helped him to win the second set 7-5.

It was sweet revenge for Nadal for his defeat to Soderling in the French Open last year in a tough final. Soderling had beaten Nadal in their two previous ATP Tour matches.

It is a good start in 2010 for the world number two Nadal, who will be looking to reclaim the world number one spot from Roger Federer.

Nadal will travel to Doha where he will start the ATP season as second seed to Federer.

Earlier in the day Federer overcame the disappointment of losing to Soderling to claim third place in the tournament.

He beat David Ferrer 6-1 7-5 and looks in very good form going into 2010.
