Higher Colleges Of Technology And Microsoft Host Digital Lifestyle Day For University Students In The UAE

Students experience a wide range of Microsoft’s latest digital lifestyle technologies

Furthering its commitment to the development of the UAE’s education sector and the creation of a knowledge based society, Microsoft Gulf hosted an event themed around the digital lifestyle of a student in partnership with Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT) at the campus of the Abu Dhabi Men’s College.

At the event, Microsoft showcased and demoed several of its key consumer products including its latest operating system, Windows 7; Windows Phone; Windows Live Services; Internet Explorer 8; XBOX 360 and Windows Media Center and showed how the company is delivering on its vision for a digital lifestyle where devices, services and applications work together seamlessly.

In addition, the event aimed to educate and inform technology students of several opportunities available to them including Imagine Cup, the world’s premier student technology competition; free access to professional software through the DreamSpark program and connections to employers through the Students to Business program.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Tayeb Kamali, Vice Chancellor of the Higher Colleges of Technology said, “Technology has always been a fundamental building block for effective learning and hence remains at the core of higher education across all disciplines. Digital Lifestyle Today is yet another opportunity for our students to remain abreast of innovations in information technology.

Microsoft and HCT have been working closely over the years in ensuring our students have access the latest tools and technologies that prepare them for a successful career in the globalized business environment.”

Charbel Fakhoury, General Manager, Microsoft Gulf added, “Today, students live in a world with more digital content and information than ever before. Microsoft’s goal with an event such as this is to equip the next generation of leaders with a rich set of productivity and collaboration tools as they move from campus to business environments and prepare them for future success. Putting technology to work for the youth of our country will enable us to strengthen our economy and create greater opportunities for them to be part of the workforce. At Microsoft, we remain committed to working with academic institutions such as HCT to expand the world of learning through technology and to implement better ways to transform education for the benefit of students and communities in the region.”

Dr. Simon Jones, Director of Abu Dhabi Men’s College added, “Technology has revolutionised the daily life of a student by keeping them connected and giving them a platform to effectively collaborate. As part of our continuing commitment to education, we have created an advanced learning environment across our campus whereby students have the technology tools they need to set them on the path to academic and career success. We are pleased to be associated with Microsoft to show how technology can deliver more rich and connected experiences in their daily lives.”

Microsoft also opened registrations for its premier technology competition, Gulf Imagine Cup 2010 at the Digital Lifestyle day. Students aged 16 and over are invited to register for the eighth annual Imagine Cup competition, in which students use technology to create innovative solutions that can change the world.
