ADM Starts Application Of Countdown Pedestrian Signal System At Corniche Street

The Municipality of Abu Dhabi City has completed the installation of countdown pedestrian signaling system at the Corniche Street, starting from the Hilton Intersection to Al Mina Intersection, as part of the Municipality’s efforts to introduce the latest traffic systems at world-class standards with the ultimate goal of ensuring security and safety of all road users.

The Municipality had already concluded trial runs of the countdown signal system before contemplating its practical implementation, as the system has yielded a remarkable success in streamlining traffic and pedestrian movement at the intersections, and reduced traffic accidents rate to the minimum.

According to the Municipality, the new pedestrian light signaling system is based on a countdown digital timer clearly displaying the time pedestrians have to wait before crossing the road along with the timescale allotted for crossing; which will greatly contribute to the provision of a safe environment for them and other road users, and streamline their movement ’&’ decisions to move without having to wait or being caught in confusing conditions.

The new system has been implemented in the light of a field survey and opinion poll including a wide spectrum of the community members about the feasibility of the countdown light signal system in a field questionnaire carried out by the Municipality and an online version through the Municipality’s portal. The findings collected were positive and encouraging to the extent of prompting the Municipality to introduce the system at the Corniche Street such that it will be generalized all metropolitan streets later on.

In a related development, the scope Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) coverage monitoring the traffic movement has been expanded to cover all streets ’&’ intersections of Abu Dhabi Island, where 70 additional CCTV cameras have been installed bringing the total to 162 CCTV cameras all linked with the Main Light Signal Control Center through a modern fiber optic network to transmit live high definition images showing all details of traffic movements at various intersections at the Light Signal Control Center of the Municipality; which is run in coordination with Abu Dhabi Police General Head Quarters.

Red signal jumping monitoring ’&’ enforcement system has been modernized in most of Abu Dhabi neighbourhood to curb red signal violations in the context of a comprehensive plan to improve and upgrade the level of traffic safety at various intersections; which have now been fitted with modern high-performance digital cameras to monitor red light signal jumping cases.

These cameras have ultra-high electronic capabilities to capture images of violating vehicles and have the capacity to recognize various number plates of such vehicles in a clear and quick manner, thanks to the adoption of the latest Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technologies applied to imaging and electronic data processing systems.

Several statistical devices are installed inside and outside the city of Abu Dhabi to identify the patterns and trends of traffic movements 24 hours a day, and carry out periodical traffic surveys that help update the strategies ’&’ quality of renovations necessary at various roads and intersections of Abu Dhabi city and townships.
