Federal National Council Of UAE Will Celebrate Its 38th Anniversary Tomorrow











The FNC adopted during the holding of its first session of the current legislative chapter the strategy of updating its departments and work mechanism. A panel has been set up for this purpose. It included former FNC MPs, employees, others concerned on the national issues, as well as international and regional parliamentary experts.

The post of the FNC Speaker has been retained from 1972- 2005 by seven speakers. The first speaker was the late Thani bin Abdullah bin Humaid, for two legislative terms from 1972- 1976, followed by the late Taryem Omran Taryem for the third and fourth legislative terms from 1977- 1981, HE Hilal bin Ahmed Lootah, from the fifth legislative term to the end of the eight legislative term from 1981- 1981, HE Al Hajj bin Abdullah bin Khalifa Al Mohairabi, for the ninth to tenth legislative terms from 1994- 1996, HE Mohammed Khalifa bin Al Habtoor, for the two legislative terms, 11th and 12th, from 1997- 2002, HE Saeed Mohammed Al Kindi, for the 13th legislative chapter from 2003- 2005 and currently the Speaker is HE Abdul Aziz Abdullah Al Ghurair.

The FNC is composed of 40 members, with 8 members for both Abu Dhabi and Dubai Emirates, six members for Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah emirates and four members each for Ajman, Umm Al Qaiwain and Fujairah.

Half of the FNC members are elected, while the other half is appointed as per the decree from President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The term of membership is four years with effect from the first session. This term is called legislative chapter. The FNC convenes and goes for recess as per a decree issued by the UAE President. The sessions are held in the capital, Abu Dhabi, when there is a quorum; attendance of 21 MPs.
