TDIC Announces Phase One Completion Of Fishermen’s Marina In Al Bateen Wharf

Tourism Development and Investment Company (TDIC), a master developer of major cultural, residential and tourism destinations, has completed the renovation of the first phase of Al Bateen Wharf’s Fishermen’s Marina, Abu Dhabi.

The Fishermen’s Marina mainly services the fishermen of Al Bateen and embraces the area’s maritime heritage, including boat-craftsmanship as well as the treasured public walkway. The first phase featured the completion of the marina’s mooring berths that will accommodate 323 fishing vessels, varying in length from 10 to 18 metres. Each berth is equipped with running water, electrical power, fire fighting equipment and standard amenities.

In line with TDIC’s vision of creating sustainable developments across all projects, the design of the first phase took into consideration the preservation of the fishing heritage of the Fishermen’s Marina through revitalising its building design and adopting environmentally-friendly regulations. A 192-metre long underground culvert has been built to connect the water bodies of the east and west bays to improve the circulation and quality of water in the marina, striking a perfect balance between form and functionality.

Mubarak Hamad Al Muhairi, Managing Director of TDIC, commented on the Fishermen’s Marina project upon the completion of phase one: "We are very proud of this project as it highlights Abu Dhabi’s rich seafaring history - a cherished part of our Emirati heritage. We want visitors and residents to experience this heritage which will provide a natural gateway to our capital. Al Bateen Fishermen’s Marina has been developed to specifically serve the district’s resident fishermen who have historically occupied this area, as well as accommodate the needs of its community." By the second quarter of 2012 and upon completion of Fishermen’s Marina’s second phase, the project will see the area become a signature waterfront destination. The new development will create a place for visitors and residents to relax and soak up the rich atmosphere of genuine Emirati seafaring culture.

The second phase will consist of a fishermen’s community club, food and beverage outlets, a luxury yacht marina, a yacht club, retail outlets, underground parking structures, a boardwalk, landscaped areas, vessel maintenance facility and a promontory coffee shop.
