IPA Copyright Symposium Abu Dhabi 2010 To Draw International Audience

More than 250 delegates from 53 countries will gather in Abu Dhabi from 28 February to 1 March to discuss the challenge of copyright infringement and intellectual property to the publishing world.

The 7th IPA Copyright Symposium is organised by International Publishers Association, Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage (ADACH) and KITAB, organisers of the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair. The Symposium is supported by the UAE’s Ministry of Economy.

"Abu Dhabi is ready to host IPA Copyright Symposium. This is the first time the IPA Copyright Symposium has been held in the Arab world," said Mohammed Khalaf Al Mazrouei, Director General of the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage.

This year’s symposium is held under the theme: ’Evolving Rights Emerging Markets’.

"For IPA Copyright Symposium to be hosted in Abu Dhabi is another indication of the important steps taken by Abu Dhabi in the arena of publishing. It goes along the strategy of developing the Abu Dhabi Book Fair (ADBF) that was declared back in October 2006 and the establishment of KITAB, the company which is in charge of transforming ADBF to an international forum and a fair with the highest standards," added Al Mazrouei.

"The UAE is holding a prominent position in the worldwide list of countries that are keen to protect copyrights in all their forms and elements," he said.

"We are honoured that the IPA has chosen Abu Dhabi to host the 7th Symposium. The decision reflects the commitment of Abu Dhabi and the United Arab Emirates to stamping out intellectual property theft and copyright infringement. The Symposium is an important step in working towards our goal of establishing Abu Dhabi as the region’s publishing hub because it provides a valuable gateway for this region’s emerging industry to deal with a universal challenge," said Jumaa Al Qubaisi, Director of the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair and The National Library.

Monika Krauss, General Manager of KITAB added: "This is an important Symposium for the emerging publishing industry in our region. It is yet another platform upon which they can interact with the international players and build knowledge. Hosting the Symposium directly before the 20th Abu Dhabi International Book Fair allows delegates of both events to take full advantage of networking opportunities available." The 7th IPA Copyright Symposium will be held at Abu Dhabi’s Intercontinental Hotel from 28 February to 1 March 2010. Over the two-day conference delegates will attend a range of seminars and panel discussion workshops. The Abu Dhabi International Book Fair will open at Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC) on Tuesday, 2 March, running until 7 March.

"We are extremely pleased to be bringing the Symposium to Abu Dhabi and the Middle East for the first time, bringing together Arab and international delegates to discuss international copyright policy. Piracy and copyright infringement is not a problem unique to one country, or even one industry. It is an international problem that requires an international approach and solution," says Herman Spruijt, President of the International Publishers Association.
