Abu Dhabi To Host The 2nd GCC Women’s Sports Championship Next Month











The UAE Women’s Football Committee will organize the 2nd GCC Women’s Sports Championship in Abu Dhabi from 28 March to April 1st 2010.

The championship will be held under the patronage of H.H Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak, Chairperson of the UAE General Women’s Union and Supreme Chairperson of the UAE Family Development Foundation.

The event will be organised by the UAE Women Sports Committee in association with the Organizing Committee of the GCC Women Sports Committee.

Teams from the UAE, Qatar, Oman, Bahrain, and Kuwait will compete in various sporting activities and games including: athletics, shooting, equestrian, volleyball, football, taekwondo, and bowling. There will also be a number competitions for female athletes with special needs.

Details of the 2nd GCC Women’s Sports Championship were disclosed at a press conference held on Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010, at the Headquarters of the UAE Women’s General Union in Abu Dhabi.

The press conference was attended by Nasser Al Tamimi, Director of the 2nd GCC Women’s Sports Championship, Noura Al Ansari, Assistant Director of the championship, Nada Askar, General Coordinator of the championship, and Assila Al Muala, Member of the UAE Women’s Football Committee.

The Organizing Committee of the Tournament also released the emblem of the 2nd GCC Women’s Sports Tournament (a flower that grows in the desert after rainfall) engulfed by the colors of the flags of the participating GCC teams.

Noura Al Suwaidi, Director of General Women’s Union, Head of the UAE Women Sports Committee and Head of the Executive Office of the 2nd GCC Women’s Sports Championship, praised H.H Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak for her efforts to develop the sport activities of the UAE women and thanked her for accepting to grant patronage to the championship.

Al Suwaidi assured that an executive committee has been formed, and that the preparations to hold the event are already underway.

Al Suwaidi also stressed that the organizing of the event comes in line with the trend of the UAE to host prominent regional and international sporting events. She added that the championship in Abu Dhabi will once again consolidate its position as a prominent international capital for world class sporting and tourism events.

Al Suwaidi thanked the UAE National Olympic Committee, the General Authority for Youth ’&’ Sports, Abu Dhabi Sports Council, and all the UAE sport associations that will be taking part in this event for their great efforts and cooperation to support the UAE women’s sports processes and activities.

Al Suwaidi extended the gratitude of the UAE Women’s Sports Committee to the staff of the Abu Dhabi Media Identity Office for their efforts to enhance our national identity and their contribution to make this event successful.
