EAD Wins Award For Excellence In GIS Implementation |
||||||||||||
The Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi (EAD) has won the Excellence in GIS Implementation award for developing the Abu Dhabi Soil Information System (ADSIS), a spatially enabled web-based application. Representatives from EAD received the award at GISWORX 2010, the regional GIS Workshop & Exhibition, which was held in Dubai from March 15-17, 2010. The award was received on behalf of EAD by Dr. Mahmoud Abdelfattah, Soil Scientist and Mr. Anil Kumar Database specialist. This award-winning system provides easy access to soil-related information. Users can include decision makers, researchers, scientists, students and the general public. ADSIS also enables these users to analyze soil data based on location, or a combination of criteria to generate maps and reports. The system enables users to interact with spatial and attribute data stored in a central Geodatabase. ADSIS was one of the milestone achievements of the recent survey conducted on Abu Dhabi Emirate’s soil, which aimed to provide decision makers with better data. The survey was implemented through a successful partnership formed between EAD, the International Center for Biosaline Agriculture (ICBA), GRM International Pty Ltd Australia and many other supporting organizations within the UAE and abroad. The soil survey involved the mapping and classification of the various types of soils in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. First, the entire Emirate was surveyed at a scale of 1:100,000, and in the second phase 400,000 hectares of land, evaluated as suitable for irrigated agriculture was surveyed at a scale of 1:25,000. As part of the project, 21 thematic maps were produced identifying suitability of soils for various purposes such as agriculture, rangeland, forestry, landfill, etc. It is worthwhile to note that in 2007, EAD was also awarded the Excellence in GIS Implementation Award. This award is given to organizations that foster innovation and experimentation in the area of GIS implementation. About Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) |
