du Supports Ministry Of Labour’s Initiatives As Official Sponsor Of International Labour Day

A marathon and cricket match for labourers in the UAE will take place in Yas Circuit in Abu Dhabi and Abu Dhabi Cricket Stadium

In line with its corporate social responsibility strategy and in recognition of the contribution of labourers in nation building, du announced today its partnership with the Ministry of Labour, as official sponsor of their International Labour Day activities.

As part of the sponsorship, du will support a marathon by selected labourers, organised by the Ministry. The marathon takes place during International Labour Day on Saturday, 1 May 2010 at the Yas Circuit in Abu Dhabi between 4:30pm - 7:30pm, in which more than 2000 workers from different property developers across the UAE will be participating. In addition, du will be sponsoring a cricket match on 3 May at Abu Dhabi Cricket Stadium between the UAE cricket team and a team composed of cricket players from various labour camps, in collaboration with various UAE real estate developers, through which a large number of workers will be attending.

Humaid bin Deemas, the acting director general at the Ministry of Labour, thanked du for supporting these initiatives and said: “The Ministry of Labour is conducting these initiatives on this important day in order to recognise all workers for their efforts in building different projects in the UAE, and also to honour their vital role in the UAE’s economic growth and raise awareness among people in the region.”

Bin Deemas added: “du’s support of this event underlines its commitment towards supporting all communities within the UAE’s society, including labourers. This initiative is another example of the company’s ongoing support of the labourers, having already introduced its ‘Alo’ SIM card which enables labourers to stay connected with family and friends in the UAE and abroad.

On behalf of du, Hala Badri, EVP, Brand and Communications, thanked the Ministry of Labour for the special opportunity and said: “Labour is one of the important ingredients in economic success and growth of all countries, including the UAE, and this is why we are keen to play a role with the government in its efforts to support these people, who work hard to contribute to our society’s development. We believe that our role today is not only providing telecom solutions, but also giving back to the community in which we operate and, in particular, supporting a segment of the community which contributes to building and sustaining our great nation.”

The Ministry of Labour has organised a full programme of activities for labourers during International Labour Day, which is taking place from 25 April up until 3 May 2010. The programme includes sports activities, and road shows to highlight the contribution of labourers across different schools in the UAE, as well as a competition for students to design the International Labour Day 2011 logo.
