Semiconductor Research To Play Major Role In Building Advanced Technology Ecosystem In Abu Dhabi

Two-day semiconductor forum to draw international R&D community to Abu Dhabi May 23-24

A senior group of semiconductor industry leaders and distinguished academics will gather in Abu Dhabi next week to map out some of the major research and development challenges facing the industry’s future. Co-hosted by the Semiconductor Research Corporation (SRC), a leading research organization, and the Advanced Technology Investment Company (ATIC), the forum will focus on the development of low-energy electronic systems, one of the most significant areas of potential technological advancement.

With semiconductor devices in almost every electronic product, improving the energy efficiency of these devices has the potential to significantly impact global energy consumption. Over the course of two days, delegates will discuss in detail low-power research in the field of microelectronics. The outcome of these discussions will enable local and international delegates to formulate strategies for future research.

“Minimum energy use for electronics is an essential component to preserving our natural resources,” said Steve Hillenius, executive vice president of Semiconductor Research Corporation. “The expected outcomes of this forum are the ideas from the best experts in industry and academia for novel steps toward this goal. SRC has a unique opportunity in our partnership with the universities, industry members and ATIC to facilitate this event.”

Ibrahim Ajami, CEO of ATIC said: “Innovative technologies that reduce energy consumption are important for the overall industry, in terms of new markets and global impact.”

“The development of Abu Dhabi as a hub for leading-edge semiconductor capabilities, research and development is enabling the Emirate to realize its vision to diversify its economy away from dependency on oil and gas. This is a sector that is constantly innovating. ATIC is committed to the establishment of facilities and capabilities here in Abu Dhabi to ensure that the Emirate develops an R&D ecosystem for advanced technology. The forum next week enables us to take another step towards our goal as a hub for semiconductor innovation,” he added.

The Forum will take place from 23 – 24 May 2010, at the Yas Hotel in Abu Dhabi. Keynote speeches will be presented by world-leading academics in the field of semiconductors and leading industry thinkers from internationally renowned technology companies.
