United Arab Emirates University chosen as Middle East centre for examinations for one of Europe’s oldest medical colleges

United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) has been chosen by the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (RCPI) to be only the second overseas venue for the examinations of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine.

The first was in Kuala Lumpur in 1996. The examinations, which took take place in UAEU’s Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, follow an MOU signed between the two leading institutions in 2008. The Faculty of Occupational Medicine, RCPI has Licentiates, Members and Fellows all around the world which is why the assessments are being held abroad as well as in Dublin.

The examinations took place at UAEU’s Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences on 19th, 20th and 22nd May. Two examiners from the Faculty in Dublin will mark the papers in Al Ain, assisted by examiners from UAEU. The conferment ceremony took place Yesterday evening in Al Ain where the Provost of UAEU, Professor W. Rory Hume, PhD, and the Dean of UAEU’s Faculty of Medicine and Health Services, Professor Mohamed Yousif Hasan Baniyas, PhD, were conferred with honorary fellowships by the Faculty of Occupational Medicine, RCPI.

Dr John Donohoe, President of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland, said: "We are delighted to be partnering with UAEU where the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences is undoubtedly one of the leading medical research centres in the GCC and wider region. This expertise, combined with the obvious geographic benefit of the UAE, makes UAEU the ideal centre for our Middle East examinations".

"The Royal College of Physicians of Ireland continues to develop and maintain high professional standards in specialist medical practice in order to achieve optimum patient care and to promote health nationally and internationally. We look forward to a strong partnership with our colleagues at UAEU", he added.

Dr W. Rory Hume, Provost of United Arab Emirates University, said: "It is an enormous privilege for us to welcome the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland to the UAE. The RCPI has a long and distinguished history of ensuring the highest standards in vital areas of medical practice. As the leading medical research body in the region we are honoured to be partnering with this distinguished body".

"UAEU is committed to the furtherance of the Nation through the highest quality of directly-relevant research and education to benefit the UAE. As we continue to partner with world-class organisations we are also able to demonstrate our increasing standards overseas. I wish all those who took the examinations the very best of luck", Dr. Hume added.
