MEED, the Middle East’s premier business intelligence provider, today announced the launch of the inaugural Quality Awards for Projects 2010, a first of its kind award in the Middle East based solely on the quality of entrants.

To be held at the Ritz Carlton in Bahrain on 14 December, the awards will aim to raise standards through benchmarking the best practice specified in the project brief and excellence provided in the contract delivery across 11 categories.

Entities from across the GCC region are invited to register for the awards on www.meedawards.com before 22 July.

To be selected at the national level in October, winners of the Quality Awards for Projects 2010 will be the project teams of clients working with service providers that have delivered major projects - completed or operational - in the GCC over the previous two years.

Details of the awards were announced on the sidelines of MEED’s Arabian World Construction Summit (AWCS) held as part of the Arabian Construction Week that opened on 24 May at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre.

Edmund O’Sullivan, MEED Events Chairman, said: “We have launched the awards to recognise project delivery across a wide range of developments in the region. There are numerous phenomenal projects in the GCC and we want to give credit to the companies that are raising the industry benchmarks and leading their respective fields.

“Effectively, the event will serve as a platform for organisations that have delivered quality in construction, engineering and project management to continue inspiring, leading and receiving the necessary credit for their achievements.

Winning an award will send a message to the market that quality is essential in all parts of the project management process – from health, safety and training to innovation and sustainable development.”

The awards will encompass 11 categories, including the top Oil and Gas Project of the Year, Best Industrial Project, Power and Water Desalination Project, Water Reuse Project, Leisure and Tourism Project, Transport and Logistics Project, Road Project, Mixed Development Project, Social Project, Building Project, and Best Sustainable Project for 2010.

In addition, the MEED Project of the Year will recognize the overall winner of winners, while an Outstanding Achievement of the Year will also be awarded to an individual who has contributed to best practice over the previous year and endeavored to push for higher standards and superior quality.

Soon to be announced, a jury has been appointed at the national level comprising members from the Society of Engineers in every GCC country. Experts in their respective fields, the totally independent judging panel will adopt a stringent set of criteria to reward only the highest quality projects.

O’Sullivan added: “We have ensured an impartial selection process by establishing a judging panel from every GCC country to bring the best projects to the fore. The winners will be regarded as being the best of the best in the region, embodying the principles that MEED has always championed through its drive towards quality in the industries that we support.”

The Quality Awards for Projects 2010 will serve as a multinational merit-based approach to benchmarking best practices in the region’s construction projects. It will also aim to promote values that create the best environment for improvement in business and industry, as well as social and cultural arenas.

The criteria for the awards will focus on specific questions relating to the project development and execution in each category but overall the judges will be looking for demonstrable examples and descriptions in the following key areas – economic and social feasibility, architecture and design, engineering, construction procurement and project / programme management, environmental impact and sustainability. The evaluation will be strict and transparent, giving careful consideration to the questions posed. On its part, MEED will ensure that the information provided is clear, concise and accurate.

Organized in partnership with MEED, the Arabian Construction Week incorporates four dedicated vertical trade exhibitions on Future-Build Middle East, Green Building Middle East, Civil Engineering Middle East and Building Machinery Middle East.
