Abu Dhabi Island Base Map Project Nearing Completion











The Municipality of Abu Dhabi City announced that it is in the final stage of producing a base map depicting all urban areas within the administrative boundaries of the Municipality of Abu Dhabi City and the Western Region Municipality covering a total area of 18,500 square km approximately, after having completed the planning ’&’ design stages, and the project implementation plan which started since January this year.

The projects is intended to build and update the base map and further extend the geographic range of the spatial database in an endeavor to provide an integrated database and information structure aimed at streamlining planning decision making related to the development of Abu Dhabi City in line with the Strategic Development Plan Abu Dhabi 2030.

The Municipality has accomplished nearly 85% of aerial photography of Abu Dhabi Island, Al Raha Beach, Mussafah and Yas Island. Placing of aerial photography marks has been fully completed in Abu Dhabi Island and Greater Abu Dhabi City, while work is up and running in completing and intensifying both horizontal and vertical networks for survey control points according to the approved project plan on the account that these points represent the main reference to define the positions of various features such as roads, buildings, lands, etc.

Eng. Yousef Al Marzooqi, Director of Spatial Data, Town Planning Sector, stated that the accomplishment was part of Phase I of project implementation which would be followed by collecting data and information from aerial photographs supported by a field survey to ensure data credibility and integration and their incorporation into the Municipality’s GIS database after several verifications and revisions to ensure their validity for use by the concerned entities following the best data verification international practices and standards.

He added: "The Municipality is in the process of upgrading spatial data software and analytical and modeling spatial data in order to uplift its readiness and enhance the efficiency of services provided to all government and private entities and the public. By the end of the year, aerial photography will be completed for all urban areas within the administrative boundaries of the Municipality of Abu Dhabi City and the Western Region Municipality as part of the Base Map Completion Project. This will be followed by the use of high definition aerial photographs of 10 cm in Abu Dhabi Island and 20 cm in the other areas. Works on project implementation will be completed by the middle of next year in line with the approved working plan.

The Municipality has prepared a comprehensive and integrated plan to ensure the continued updating of the base map data through the implementation of a specific mechanism whereby the various projects and formal daily procedures can be followed up with a view to ensuring the continuity of updating spatial database in the Municipality of Abu Dhabi City which will be carried out after completion of aerial photography.

It is noteworthy that the Municipality of Abu Dhabi City has already embarked upon the implementation of the base map project and activation of its role with a view to updating the spatial database of Abu Dhabi Emirate and securing the necessary information that contributes to supporting the proper practical decision making in all development and infrastructure projects as part of an integrated plan to promote quality based municipal services and application of the best international practices to meet the requirements and expectations of its customers and stakeholders, including decision makers, strategic partners, contractors, individuals and the public at large.
