4000 Teachers To Receive 124 Hours Of Training Within The New School Model During 2010/2011 Academic Year

The Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC) announced today the introduction of faculty heads in Abu Dhabi schools. A group of 214 faculty heads, cluster managers, and leadership advisors gathered today at the Fairmont Hotel in Abu Dhabi for the first day of the Teaching and Learning Academy. The three day session is set to provide the new faculty heads and administrators with a clear description of their roles in supporting Abu Dhabi teachers and students during the the implementation of ADEC’s New School Model (NSM). They will be responsible for delivering the training to the teachers throughout the school year. All teachers will receive four hours of training a week summing up to 124 hours of training throughout the year.

“ADEC is pleased to have these new faculty leaders join our community of educators in our path to transform Abu Dhabi to a knowledge producing society,” said HE Dr. Mugheer Khamis Al Khaili, Director General at ADEC. “ADEC has an important role in delivering the goals our leaders have set out in Abu Dhabi’s 2030 vision that will require a strong and skilled workforce. It is our goal to see these are met, a goal that we must fulfill together with teachers, faculty heads, principals, parents and the wider community,” added H.E. Dr Al Khaili.

The faculty heads will be placed in KG1, KG2, and Cycle 1 schools with one English native speaker faculty head and one Arabic speaker faculty head in each school. The main role of the faculty head will be to support teachers by: conducting daily classroom walkthroughs; providing advice, coaching, and supervision to teachers; and supporting teachers who are experiencing classroom management issues. A main focus will be monitoring and assisting teachers in the implementation of ADEC’s NSM.

“This training has given me insight into the managerial, organizational, and functional role of a faculty head,” said Dr. Linda Andrews, a faculty head in Al Ain. “The next days will help me further understand the tasks in developing my role as an ADEC faculty head and I look forward to putting that into practice,” she added.

The NSM, set to roll out in KG1, KG2 and grades 1,2 &3 this year, will transform the class room to a student-centered environment. Students will be at the center of an active teaching and learning environment supported by schools, families, and the community. Key focuses of the new school model will be increasing English and Arabic speaking proficiency and transitioning students to become critical and individual thinkers.

“The New School Model is really impressive. The thought put into the model and the changes that will take place will be great for the kids,” said Laurie Pendelton, Executive Director of Professional Development for Leeds Global Partners. Leeds Global Partners have been appointed by ADEC to develop and implement professional development programs for school teachers and administrators.

Today’s Teaching and Learning Academy is the first of a set of training programs and presentations focusing on the NSM. On September 13, ADEC will be gathering over 6,000 teachers and administrators in the first ‘Al Bedaya’ forum that will see the official roll-out of the new school model. The sessions will conclude on 14 September with a Teaching and Learning Academy session taking place in 29 different areas across the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
