Brighton College In Abu Dhabi Appoints Founding Headmaster

School to Open in September 2011

Bloom Properties, the Abu Dhabi-based developer of property and lifestyle solutions and the Brighton College Abu Dhabi (BCAD), today announced the appointment of Brendan Law as founding Headmaster of the Abu Dhabi campus of the leading UK school.

Brighton College and Bloom Properties had signed a joint venture in 2009 to establish a series of schools around the world, using the Brighton College brand.

Scheduled to open in September 2011 in the heart of Abu Dhabi island at Bloom Gardens community, a development of exclusive new villas, the new school will aim to become the leading institution for private education in the Middle East. It will cater to children aged 3-18 years, though admissions in the first year will be for children aged 3-14.

Lord Skidelsky, Chairman of Governors of Brighton College and an eminent economist, said: “We are delighted that Brendan Law will be joining our school. We were looking for someone who had experience of both senior and junior schools with a proven track record in school leadership. Law ticks every box. He spent much of his career in a senior management role at Bedford School – which topped the International Baccalaureate league table in the UK this year – and the remainder as Headmaster of Westbourne House School, the leading 3-13 junior school in
southern England and one of the best in the UK.”

Brighton College Abu Dhabi will draw heavily on its highly successful model, bringing an elite high school education to Abu Dhabi for the first time. The aim is to produce well-rounded, highly educated young people for entrance to leading UK and US universities.

Saed Arekat, CFO , of Bloom Properties said: “Brighton College will add and enrich Abu Dhabi’s offerings in the education sector. We are confident Brendan Law will set the right standards to launch and manage the school. We are proud to contribute to the development of future generations and aim to offer services in line with the principles enshrined in Abu Dhabi 2030 vision.”

Brighton College, founded in 1845, is one of the leading schools in England. In 2008, 2009 and 2010, it enjoyed the best A-level results for any co-educational school in England (out of 2,200 schools). Brighton College currently educates 1,400 pupils aged 3-18 in its Pre-Prep, Prep and Senior schools. It also has a national reputation for cricket, rugby, netball, art, drama, dance and music.

Brendan Law said: “I am delighted and honoured by my appointment as Headmaster of Brighton College Abu Dhabi. The opportunity to lead what promises to be one of the outstanding British schools abroad is very exciting. I and my family will look forward to playing a full part in the life of the College from September 2011.

“At BCAD, first class academic education will be delivered by enthusiastic and supportive staff, who will be specialists at every level. We have already begun the process of recruiting the very best staff available. BCAD will be a caring, tolerant, family school, in the same way as Westbourne House and Brighton College have become the leading schools on the south coast. I have a clear ambition for BCAD - to ensure it becomes the best school in the Middle East.”

In its plan for the school, Bloom has adequately designed the campus to provide distinct centres for sport, academic, as well as the visual and performing arts. The three areas will be linked by spaces for outdoor learning and social interaction.

As part of the school’s overall objective to offer amenities for residents and the community at large, the sport and arts facilities will be available for community use even after school hours. The facilities will be located at areas that offer easy access to the entire Bloom community to ensure that the campus security as well as students’ health and safety are not compromised upon.
