KUSTAR Broadens Its Reach In USA With An Institutional Collaboration In Education And Research With Georgia Institute Of Technology

KUSTAR and Georgia Tech sign a five year plan to establish world class curricula and research in Engineering

Khalifa University of Science, Technology and Research (KUSTAR) and the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech), announced today their partnership to develop cutting edge Engineering-based education and research initiatives in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the United States of America (USA).

The two institutions today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at a ceremony held in Abu Dhabi, UAE. The main objectives of this MOU are to establish a framework for exploring KUSTAR-sponsored research, cooperative joint research opportunities and joint educational programs. The two parties will explore areas in which Georgia Tech may provide assistance with short-and long-term faculty and administrative needs, and encourage exchange experiences for students and faculty.

The agreement, which is valid for an initial period of five years, will cover the bilateral exchange of information and experience in education and research and to explore opportunities for submitting proposals for joint projects. This includes: integrating content for course material, joint collaborative research projects between faculty and/or research groups, and world class lectures or seminars provided by either party.

Commenting on the new agreement, Prof. Tod Laursen, President, KUSTAR, said: "Partnerships such as this one with Georgia Tech allow us to enhance the technological, social and cultural relations of both countries from an international perspective, and provide exciting new educational opportunities for the students of all participating institutions. From KUSTAR’s point of view, this relationship provides a great stimulus to our teaching and research efforts aimed at cultivation of a new generation of technically advanced students in the UAE."

“We feel that alliances such as this not only enrich our research focus areas but also leverage our expertise on an international platform,” said Georgia Tech’s Dean of Engineering Don Giddens. “Our strengths and interests align well with KUSTAR and this partnership, in both research and developing new educational programs, gives our faculty the opportunity to operate in a global context while helping our students, and the students of KUSTAR, prepare to thrive in a global economy.”

Georgia Tech is nationally and internationally renowned as one of the top technical teaching and research institutions in the world and its College of Engineering currently ranks among the top five in undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in the United States, according to the latest edition of US News and World Report. Reflecting its commitment to society, the College is also the largest producer of engineering degrees awarded to women and underrepresented minority students according to the American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE). A significant number of the faculty and students have earned distinguished honours and recognitions, including IEEE Fellowships, membership in the National Academy of Engineering, American Society for Mechanical Engineers Fellows (ASME) and more. In terms of research, the College is also regarded as one of the top public institutions in engineering research and development.

The signing ceremony was attended by KUSTAR’s Prof. Tod Laursen, President and Dr. Mohammed Al-Mualla, KUSTAR Interim Provost, as well as Georgia Tech’s Prof. Don Giddens, Dean of Engineering, Prof. Steven McLaughlin, Vice Provost for International Initiatives and Prof. Laurence Jacobs, Associate Dean of Engineering for Academic Affairs.

Last December, KUSTAR signed a multi-lateral agreement for education and human resource development with Institute of Applied Technology (IAT), Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), Human Resources Development Service of Korea (HRD) and Korea Development Institute (KDI).
