Dr Hadi Azizzada, Advisor & Deputy Director General of ISESCO, Ms. Helene Pelosse, Director General of International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and Dr. Osman Benchikh, Head of the Energy Programme at UNESCO.

“More than 500 of the world’s top renewable energy experts, researchers and academics have confirmed their attendance for the Congress in which 398 of the 850 papers and abstract received by the 80-members technical committee will be presented in this Congress, “said H.E. Majid Al Mansouri, EAD Secretary General and Chairman of the Organizing Committee in a press conference held on September 21, 2010.

He said that sustainability, green buildings, and the development of the large-scale renewable energy industry must be at the top of all development, economic, financial and political agendas. He added that the time for action had arrived and that prevention and questioning how and why we face this great challenge is a luxury we can no longer indulge in.

Al Mansouri announced that one of the key outcomes of the Congress will be establishing a Center of Excellence in Renewable Energy Research in the Gulf region. On September 24, 2010 representatives from UNESCO, ISESCO and the six Gulf countries will meet to discuss the establishment of this center in one of the Gulf countries. The Congress’s sessions will be simultaneously in different halls covering topics related to Green Buildings and Renewable Energy.

The Congress is supported by a number of international agencies, including the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the United Nations, Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO), and the European Commission. The event is supported by Masdar and sponsored by the National Energy and Water Research Centre-Abu Dhabi (NEWRC)/ADWEA and the Centre for Waste Management – Abu Dhabi, ELSEVIER and the US National Renewable Energy Laboratory.

Two main workshops will take place. The first workshop will be organised on September 25 entitled “Energy and Gender: equitable development” discussing poverty reduction and energy in developing countries. This workshop will be sponsored by the United Nations Foundation. The second workshop will be organised on September 28 and 29 entitled “Renewable Energies: opportunities and challenges of grid integration.” This workshop will be run by the European Commission.

Al Mansouri added that every day in the plenary sessions top experts, scholars and researchers will present their finding and give an up-to-date account of progress in all aspects of renewable energy.

Prof. Ali Sayigh, Chairman of the World Renewable Energy Congress, Director General of WREN and Chairman of the Technical Committee, said, “The Congress topics include: Biomass Conversion Technology; Fuel Cell, Hydrogen, and Intelligent Energy Systems; Geothermal Applications; Low Energy Architecture; Ocean Energy; Photovoltaic Technology; Radiation and Solar Materials; Solar Thermal; Wind Energy; Energy and Gender-Equitable Development; and Policy and Strategy.”

Among the highlights of the Congress will be the awarding of the Prof. Ali Sayigh Congress Trophy to the country that has most successfully promoted renewable energy over the last 2 years. The trophy, which will remain with the winning country until the following World Renewable Energy Congress, will be awarded in a rewarding ceremony taking place at the Gala Dinner at AFOC on Tuesday September 218, 2010 evening.

He added: “Six organizations will be rewarded for their cooperation with WREN and for their contributions to the field of renewable energies. In addition, eight of the most outstanding scientists’ engineers, innovators, and industrialists will be honored for their outstanding contribution to renewable energy and their dedication to the use of renewable energy in their own daily life.

“Seven universities and three individuals will be rewarded for their contribution to renewable energy over the last 20 years,” Al Sayigh said. Winners of the student competition entitled “Towards Sustainable Environment in Green Building” will also be announced. This competition aims to encourage final year students of Architecture in GCC countries to adopt sustainable building design principles. The competition entries will be exhibited at the technical exhibition running parallel to the Congress. The exhibition will also feature many national and international exhibitors covering equipment and devices related to building technology, renewable energy and environment.
