ADACH Revives Coffee Brewing Tradition At ADIHEX 2010

Nearly 40 participants from across GCC currently competing across three age groups. AED 45,000 worth of prizes to be distributed among winners.

In a gesture to restore the true traditions of Arabic coffee brewing, which is considered a symbol of Arab’s hospitality, Abu Dhabi Authority of Culture and Heritage is organizing a unique Arabic brewing competition within their stand at the Abu Dhabi International Hunting and Equestrian Exhibition, which started on September 22 and continues until September 25.

The competition takes place daily at 5pm at the ADACH stand. Nearly 40 participants from the UAE and the rest of the GCC are currently competing for top honors across three age group categories. The first age group consists of participants under 20 years old, the second consists of participants from 20-50 years of age while the third age group is for those above 50.

The competition is being judged by three local specialists in Arabic coffee brewing and its traditions. According to Saeed Al Kaabi, Director of the ADACH coffee brewing competition, “the preparation of Arabic coffee in the traditional way passes through different stages and is done in the presence of guests, starting from the frying of the coffee beans, then banging them and cooking them. In the competition too, all of those stages are judged in addition to presentation and the actual taste of the coffee."

Mr Kaabi added: “the Arabic coffee has always been a sign of hospitality among Arabs, and tastes differently depending on the ways of frying and boiling of the beans as well as the different ingredients added. Our coffee brewing competition is aimed at reviving this tradition, among men in particular. The purpose of combing different age groups is to allow the young generation to experience traditions that they never had an opportunity experience before in their own unique way."

A total of five winners will be chosen from each age group Day 4 with a total of AED 45,000 worth of prizes up for grabs.

ADIHEX 2010 is being held under the patronage of HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler’s representative in Al Gharbia (the Western Region) of Abu Dhabi, the Chairman of the Emirates Falconers Club (EFC), with support from ADACH and the Organization of the Emirates Falconers Club.

The event is co-sponsored by leading corporate organizations including Abu-Dhabi Sports Council, Invest AD, HSBC, Bonyan, Wathba Stud Farm and Areej Al Ameerat.
