The Hague Academy Of International Law Comes To Abu Dhabi

The 37th Session of the External Program to focus on Sustainable Development

For the First time in Abu Dhabi, and as direct result of the collaboration between the Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC) and the Paris-Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi (PSUAD), the UAE capital will host a series of lectures organized by Hague Academy of International Law under the theme of “Sustainable Development” from November 4 - 11, 2010.

In a fast-moving city where development in all sectors is continuously on the rise, the internationally-recognized concept of sustainable development comes highly into focus. The Hague Academy chose to hold its 37th Session of the External Program in Abu Dhabi, considering the city’s recent initiatives in sustainable development, including being hosts of the IRENA (the International Renewable Energy Agency) conference and the launching of MASDAR (Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company).

H.E. Dr. Mugheer Khamis Al Khaili, Director General of ADEC, met with Mr. Yves Daudet, Secretary General of The Hague Academy of International Law, and Prof. Jean-Yves de Cara, Executive Director of PSUAD, earlier in February this year to discuss the Academy’s event that is taking place for the first time in the Gulf region.

H.E. Dr. Mugheer Khamis Al Khaili, welcome the idea of holding such conferences and confirmed the readiness of ADEC to support and sponsor all events that contribute in developing further higher education in Abu Dhabi Emirates.

“The development of a world-class higher education system that is in line with international standards is important to ADEC’s strategy for education reform in the emirate. ADEC is keen to establish partnerships with international organizations and institutions to enhance transfer of knowledge and implement best practices in education” he said.

The opening ceremony of this event will be attended by H.E. Boutros Boutros Ghali, President of the Curatorium of The Hague Academy of International Law and former United Nations Secretary General.

Held each year in a different continent, The Hague Academy session is open to no more than 40 participants, while remaining faithful its commitment to include the majority of participants from the host country. Through a scientific board of highly qualified scholars on international law, the academy aims at promoting the awareness of international law from a perspective that scopes peace-making, nations-collaboration, and continuous development.

Targeting UAE nationals as a primary segment and UAE residents as a secondary segment in the fields of law or legal background education, this highly reputable international educational meeting will serve as an eye-opening experience through a number of seminars and lectures highlighting the latest theories and key research in the area of international law. Participants will come from the UAE, Bahrain, Iraq, Iran, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Yemen.

Prof. de Cara said: “PSUAD is excited to host this exclusive international event in Abu Dhabi. Sustainable development is a subject that is particularly relevant to Abu Dhabi, and this is an ideal opportunity for us to engage our students and the broader community in academic and thought leadership activities, just as we do in our campus in Paris.”

Mr. Daudet said: “The Hague Academy is a global center for research and teaching in international law, and we are pleased to bring this seminar to Abu Dhabi for the first time. Abu Dhabi has demonstrated a commitment to sustainable practices through a number of its developments and initiatives, making it the perfect location for this year’s seminar.”

The program includes seminars covering International Trade and Energy, Environment and Sustainable Development, and International Law that will be delivered by prominent speakers and experts in international law, international trade and development.

Lectures with question and answer sessions will be moderated by judges from the International Court of Justice (ICJ) Judge Awn Al-Khasawneh on “Self determination in International Law”; Judge Mohammed Bennouna on “The advisory function of the International Court of Justice in the light of recent developments”; Ms Helene Pelosse, Director-General IRENA on “The role of IRENA”; and Prof. Jean-Yves de Cara from PSUAD on “The Arab world and Globalization.”

With the support of Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority (ADWEA) to the 37th Session of the academy, the program will conclude with round table discussions moderated by Prof. Yves Daudet on the “Positions and actions of the Emirates on Sustainable Development.”
