du Announces ’Pink Ribbon Week’ In Support Of Breast Cancer Awareness

The company does its part to boost awareness in the UAE and remind women to take preventative action for earlier detection

Demonstrating its commitment to supporting worthy causes both in the UAE and across the world as part of its Corporate Social Responsibilities, du today launched a series of initiatives in support of Breast Cancer Awareness. du’s ‘Pink Ribbon Week’, which runs from 24 to 30 October 2010, aims to promote greater awareness of the disease, as well as demonstrating support and contributing towards this important cause.

“National Breast Cancer Awareness Month is dedicated to increasing awareness of the importance of early breast cancer detection. Here in the UAE the problem is truly serious, with breast cancer being identified as one of the leading forms of cancer, with even girls as young as 16 susceptible to it. This is what compelled us to personally contribute to this important global campaign by launching our own ‘Pink Ribbon Week’ with the aim of boosting awareness of this disease among our colleagues and the community and reminding women to take preventive action for earlier detection,” commented Hala Badri, EVP Brand and Communications, du.

Employee participation
During this week, du has organised a series of initiatives in support of breast cancer awareness, including a special SMS message that is being sent out to all du customers. du employees are participating in the BurJuman Pink Walkathon on Friday 29 October, an annual charitable, non-competitive event aimed at raising both awareness and funds for breast cancer.

In addition, all du’s digital communication channels -www.du.ae, the intranet, twitter and Facebook pages will carry the pink ribbon throughout the week. The company will also be supporting other Breast Cancer Awareness initiatives such as the Breast Cancer Event at Le Meridien Mina Seyahi on 27 October, where du will be donating a smartphone as a prize.

Educational video
The company’s director of Medical & Occupational Health Services, Dr. Mansoor and the communication team have put together a short awareness video to be aired in all du’s retail stores across the UAE. The clip will provide useful information, tips and advice about the prevention and early detection of breast cancer.

Charity, as always, begins at home at du. Colleagues have been briefed on the week’s activities and encouraged to participate in the Pink Walkathon on Friday. They have also been invited to share any inspirational or encouraging experiences they may have had of either personally dealing with breast cancer or helping a relative or close friend cope with the disease, as it could help someone in the same situation. du employees are sporting pink ribbons as a mark of solidarity with all those who have been affected by the disease or lost someone to it and to support those who are working on a cure.
