Bu Tinah ’Beetles’ Hit Abu Dhabi Streets

The Bu Tinah ’Beetles’ takeover the streets of Abu Dhabi throughout the month of November. The Bu Tinah voting booth will make its debut presence at the 2010 Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the Abu Dhabi Corniche Fan Zone and at the Yas Hotel. The Bu Tinah voting booth will be enticing shoppers at Marina Mall and Mall of the Emirates, as part of a fresh push as the competition heats up.

The Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi’s (EAD) Vote Bu Tinah! campaign is heating up this month, with the Agency pushing efforts for the Island to become internationally recognised as one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature.

EAD has unleashed a vehicle fleet of ‘Bu Tinah Beetles’ on the streets of Abu Dhabi in a bid to encourage people to vote by texting ‘Bu Tinah’ to 3888, as many times as they wish. The Beetles will make their way across Abu Dhabi for the entire month of November.

The roaming Bu Tinah voting booth is also making its debut presence throughout the much anticipated 2010 Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The booth will be housed at the Abu Dhabi Corniche Fan Zone and at the Yas Hotel and is expected to attract thousands of voters on the sidelines of this major event.

Shoppers strolling inside Abu Dhabi’s Marina Mall and Dubai’s Mall of the Emirates will also have the chance to vote for the Island.

“When people vote for Bu Tinah it sends a clear message that they care about preserving our natural heritage and protecting our environment. By simply voting via SMS or at the voting booth, our community is playing a part in maintaining the Island and its surrounding waters in a natural and healthy state. We’re grateful to all those who have voted so far and hope they continue to spread the word,” said Laila Yousef Al Hassan, Manager of Communications and Marketing, EAD and a campaign spokesperson.

If Bu Tinah Island is recognised as one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature, it will play a large role in the overall marine environmental conservation in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and the region. The unique island is a core area of the Marawah Marine Biosphere Reserve - the first marine biosphere reserve in the region, which in spite of the harsh temperatures and salinity, its habitats and species, including coral, seagrass, dugongs and sea turtles, continue to thrive, making the Island an important location and living lab for climate change studies for years to come.

The campaign is under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Ruler’s Representative in the Western Region and Chairman of EAD. The Tourism Development & Investment Company (TDIC), a master developer of major cultural, residential and tourism destinations in Abu Dhabi, is the campaign’s Platinum Sponsor.
