Campaign targets both public and private sector to implement environment, health and safety standards among member entities

The Abu Dhabi Environment, Health and Safety Center launched the first phase of an awareness campaign on Abu Dhabi Environment, Health and Safety Management System (AD EHSMS). “Hand In Hand For You” encourages public and private organisations to implement responsible, safe and sustainable policies in the work environment.

The launch ceremony was led by H.E Majid Al Mansouri, Secretary General of the Environment Agency-Abu Dhabi (EAD) and Chairman of the EHS Higher Committee. In his speech, H.E Al Mansouri expressed his thanks and appreciation for His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, and His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Emirate Executive Council, for their support given to the EHSMS initiative. In addition, the H.E Al Mansouri thanked all members of the committee for their diligent efforts in making this initiative a success.

The campaign was organized in accordance with the recommendations of the EHS Higher Committee. It targets sectors and their entities with the aim of raising awareness on the importance of implementing EHS management systems that lead to minimization of hazards and pollution reduction in work places. It also targets the general public to raise awareness on environment, health and safety issues. This phase of the campaign will extend for 3 months followed by two campaigns in 2011.

Implementation of the system will have many benefits for the private and government sectors entities, including:

• Protection of the environment and natural resources by setting programs in workplaces for the prevention of pollution, the reduction of water and energy consumption, the minimization of waste generation and recycling etc.
• Improved level of operating procedures comparable to advanced countries which will positively reflect on the entity and its revenues.
• Minimizing and limiting the number of incidents in the working places and consequently reducing the treatment costs and liabilities.
• Balancing between economic growth and costs incurred to treat environmental pollution.
• Creating new job opportunities in various fields and in both private and government sectors in the Abu Dhabi

Emirate, as implementing the EHS policy will require creating departments/units in different sectors and government entities that will need EHS professionals, inspectors and auditors.

• Development of national capacities within the Emirate through provision of training programs targeting sectors and government entities.
