Abu Dhabi Hosts Two UN Events

With the attendance of over 600 international delegates, the Abu Dhabi Government will host two major UN events on December 5 - 8; the 5th Annual Forum of the United Nations Global Alliance for Information and Communication Technologies and Development (UN-GAID), and the World Summit Award - Mobile Content (WSA-Mobile Content).

The Abu Dhabi Systems and Information Centre (ADSIC) will be the governmental organizer, being the local owner of the IT agenda in the emirate and the key WSA partner.

The opening session will also witness the attendance of Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Sheikha Lubna Bint Khalid Al Qasimi, Minister of Foreign Trade, Mohammad Ahmad Al Bowardi, Secretary-General of the Executive Council, together with UN senior officials and Special Advisers to the Secretary-General on IT, Mr. Talal Abu Ghazaleh, and GAID Chairman and Peter Bruck, Chairman of the WSA. Attendees will also include Arab and foreign ambassadors and diplomatic representatives, directors of local and federal departments and IT officials.

The theme of this year’s GAID Forum is "ICT for MDGs: Moving from Advocacy to Actions," around which the sessions and discussions will evolve during the two-day event.

Winners of the "Mobile Content" awards will be announced immediately the next day (December 6th).

The World Summit Award 2003 was an Austrian initiative in the framework of the World Summit of the United Nations on the Information Society; and in coordination by the International Centre for New Media, the government partners to the World Summit Award, the private sector and civil society in more than 160 member states of the United Nations. Due to the growing role of the mobile phone globally, an award has been allocated for best mobile applications in June 2010, through which the best projects in eight areas are being selected; namely, Business, Commerce, Government, Participation, Learning and Education, Entertainment and Lifestyle, Tourism, Culture, Media, News, Environment, Health, Inclusion and empowerment. During the Summit, the awards shall be given to the winners at (Jala) ceremony.

The Global Alliance for ICT and Development (GAID) was launched in 2006 as a global platform for putting the vision of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) into effect, and promoting the use of ICT to achieve the internationally agreed development goals, including the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
