Mafraq Hospital Launches Breast Diagnostic Unit

New Unit provides advanced screening and diagnostic tools in the fight against breast cancer

Following the conclusion of global Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign in October, Mafraq Hospital today announced that its state-of-the-art Breast Diagnostic Unit is now officially open and fully operational. The department is dedicated to breast cancer screening and diagnosis all year round.

“Our Breast Diagnostic Unit is now open to support the nation in the fight against breast cancer,” said Dr. Nouman Habbab, MD Consultant, Chief Nuclear Medicine and Chairman, Clinical Imaging Department. “The Unit at Mafraq Hospital is fully equipped with the latest screening and diagnostic tools. With the increased profile of the disease following Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we want women throughout the Abu Dhabi community to know that there is help and assistance available to them year-round at this dedicated centre of excellence for breast cancer screening, diagnosis and treatment.”

The Mafraq Hospital Breast Diagnostic Unit works in tandem with the community-based Bani Yas Clinic’s screening programme. Scheduling of regular screenings is based on a woman’s age as well as her family medical history, and consists primarily of mammograms. Depending on the results of a mammogram, physicians may ask the patient to undergo a further examination. Those patients at Bani Yas Clinic who are in need of further diagnosis are immediately referred to the Breast Diagnostic Unit at Mafraq Hospital for more in-depth analysis using advanced diagnostic tools such as ultrasound, MRI, stereo-tactic biopsies, and blood tests.

Mr. John Nickens, CEO, Mafraq Hospital said: “Building a modern Breast Diagnostic Unit at Mafraq Hospital was essential. This Unit will such an important role – it will not only save lives but also help to alleviate the stresses and concerns of women during diagnosis, making the process quicker, easier and more convenient than before.”

Dr. Nouman commented: “The objective of all awareness campaigns is to promote the early diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. Screening campaigns are a crucial first step, but in order to minimize delay in the final diagnosis and treatment and help save lives, linking these screening facilities to a specialized and advanced diagnostic centre - such as the one we have now at Mafraq Hospital - is a much needed second step. It is our duty to provide women in our community with the fastest, most efficient route to establishing an accurate diagnosis.”

If a physician at the Mafraq Hospital Breast Diagnostic Unit feels that the secondary in-depth analysis warrants further investigation, they will refer a patient to the Surgery Department to determine whether a lump is benign or malignant. If necessary, the patient will then move to the Oncology Department at Mafraq Hospital to establish an immediate treatment path using Chemotherapy, Radiotherapy or other treatment plans, depending on the diagnosis.

Mafraq Hospital is owned and operated by the Abu Dhabi Health Services Company PJSC (SEHA), which is responsible for all the curative activities of public hospitals and clinics in Abu Dhabi. The hospital is managed by Bumrungrad International, one of the most renowned hospital management companies in Asia, recognized internationally for its commitment to patient care and customer service.
