Abu Dhabi Municipality Sponsors National Initiative To Deploy Solar-Powered Recycling Containers

The Municipality of Abu Dhabi City is sponsoring a national initiative designed to enable the sorting out of waste at the source by using solar-powered containers deployed at various locations of the capital in the context of a strategy aimed at raising the communal awareness towards fostering a clean and sustainable environment through using modern technologies in recycling materials.

Khalifa Mohammed Al Mazroui; the General Manager of the Municipality of Abu Dhabi City said: "Sponsoring this national project by the Municipality comes in the context of its strategy to achieve and improve sustainable development with the aim of maintaining the community health and safety, boosting the culture of sustainability, engaging the community towards such concepts and adopting them as daily routines, and encouraging individuals to transform this practice into a genuine culture.

AL Mazroui said "This will ensure that conserving the environment will not be restricted to governments and public agencies but become a general community drive aimed at making Abu Dhabi a safe and sustainable venue and a top-class cosmopolitan city".

"The Municipality is continuously working to develop projects, figure out solutions, support initiatives and develop renewable energy options for the benefit of mankind and community. This national project, which the Municipality is seeking to spread together with all projects that focus on the conservation of environmental resources and management of sustainable environment, fits well with the strategic drive of Abu Dhabi Government as an integral part of its 2030 Plan.

The plan sponsored by the Municipality aims to provide about 500 solar-powered environment-friendly containers to be deployed throughout the capital in three phases within one year. The first phase started with the deployment of 150 containers at Abu Dhabi Corniche, Family Park, the Formal Park, and the Central Park" added Al Mazroui.

The initiative, which is carried out by Visual Media, a company supported by Khalifa Fund, is a 100% Emirati idea patented by Patents Rights Laws of the UAE, and the Company has ranked as the first runner up in the Manchester Innovative Business Award. Sorting out waste at the source saves 50% of Carbon dioxide emissions produced from waste, besides that it separates organic, glazed and paper wastes in preparation for recycling them by using renewable and clean energy capable of preserving the environment.

All containers used are made of a non-corrosive material in elegantly designs. The automatic recycling process prevents containers from releasing unpleasant odors. The solar-powered panel fitted to the container is capable of absorbing energy during the day to provide light at night through the solar-powered back-lit and thus serves as advertising display panels to raise public awareness.
