Region’s First Graduate Program In International And Civil Security To Be Showcased By Khalifa University At IDEX 2011

Khalifa University will join other leading institutions at the International Defence Exhibition and Conference (IDEX) to announce the launch of the region’s first graduate program in International and Civil Security. IDEX will be held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE and Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces.

The event will last from Sunday 20th to Thursday 24th of February, 2011 at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Center (ADNEC). Now in its tenth year, IDEX is still the largest defence and security event in the Middle East and North African Region.

A number of Khalifa University faculty and staff will be present at the event to announce the launch of the latest academic offering, The Masters of Arts in International and Civil Security, a first for the region. The Khalifa University’s Institute of International Studies and Civil Security research strategy will aim to produce research which strengthens the security of the U.A.E. in a way that is responsive to the needs of national and global security decision-makers. Beyond that, the goal is to produce research that competes at the world level in originality and importance, enabling the program to make major contributions that enhance regional, international, and human security.

Commenting on Khalifa University’s participation at IDEX, Khalifa University President Tod A. Laursen, stated; “Throughout the world, the fields of international and civil security are growing in importance, most notably in facilities, properties and communities security. The rise of international terrorism and the increase in risks and threats to public facilities coupled with the increased visibility of disasters and of the difficulties in managing those disasters, has led to a global surge in demand for qualified international, regional, and civil security experts. In line with Abu Dhabi Vision 2030, Khalifa University’s MA program in International Studies and Civil Security has been designed to address this need.”

Dr. Arif Sultan Al Hammadi, Executive Vice President of Khalifa University, said, “We are delighted to participate at IDEX, as it is the best medium for us to meet with other experts in the international and civil security field and we will also be able to showcase our course to all security professionals in attendance.”

Dr. David Goldfischer was recently appointed as the director of the Institute of International and Civil Security at Khalifa University. He has previously served as Associate Professor at the Joseph Korbel School of International Studies, University of Denver in the US, where he was the founder and director of the MA Program in International Security, the M.A. Program in Homeland Security, and the Institute on Globalization and Security (IGLOS). He is also a co-founder of the Homeland Security/Defence Education Consortium (HSDEC), which links Homeland Security education programs in the United States and internationally.
