Sailors Converge On Abu Dhabi For Laser Regatta

Abu Dhabi Sailing Club will host The National Abu Dhabi Laser Regatta on Friday and Saturday, February 25-26, at the newly completed Watersports Centre of The Club at Mina Zayed, Abu Dhabi.

Two days of highly competitive dinghy racing will take place in the cobalt sea between the islands of Abu Dhabi, Sowwah, Reem and Saadiyat. Up to 50 boats will vie for trophies, helmed by the best national and expatriate skippers from around the country.

"We are looking forward to bringing the best Laser sailors in the UAE together for this regatta from our new facility at The Club, and we are grateful to our sponsors for helping make it happen," said Barry Jarman, Commodore of the Abu Dhabi Sailing Club, which is a sub-section of The Club.
The regatta is staged in partnership with The National newspaper, with the generous support of Turner & Townsend, Laser Performance and The Club.

Mr Jarman added: "Our sailing club has just celebrated its 44th birthday and we are excited to be playing a role in the development of modern sailing in Abu Dhabi, especially with our new youth sail training programme."

The Laser, a single-handed Olympic class boat, is the world’s most popular sailing dinghy. Its appeal derives from the fact that all Laser hulls are identical, ensuring that the sailor wins the race, not the boat.

There will be between six and eight races over the two days, with the winners receiving prizes of new equipment from Laser Performance.

VIP guests from the media, corporate and sailing worlds will view the action from a 50-foot dhow, Luluwa, which will cruise around the bay next to the race course.

Ian Walker, the skipper of the Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing team, and Jamie Boag, chief executive of Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing, will be the special guests and award prizes to the winners.
