As part of its on-going efforts to develop its educational programmes, the Department of Interpretation and Education at Sharjah Museums Department (SMD) is organizing a series of special educational workshops during the current month of April to enhance and develop thinking abilities among children, as part of their family amusement day held every Saturday.

The department organized an Outdoor family Day on Saturday, 7 April, under the title "Explore Creative Architecture", which started with a tour of the Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization where families visited the Owen Jones exhibition and viewed its collections and the artist’s works which focused on architecture. The participating families then toured the Heritage Area where they explored the aesthetics of historical and heritage buildings from their perspective and compared them with the objects displayed at the Owen Jones exhibition.

A very special workshop titled "Sail, Travel and Fly, is scheduled to be held next Saturday, 14 April, at the Sharjah Archaeology Museum. The workshop will then continue with a trip to the Al Mahatta Museum where families will learn about the evolution of land, sea and air transport means. The participating families will explore historical means of transportation in the Arabian Peninsula in the period from 300 BC to 611 AD, during which people used camels and horses to travel by land, and old ships to travel by sea.

The children will get the chance to learn more about historical means of transportation as evidenced by the archaeological Greek Jar (Amphora) and the water bottle (Zamzamia), which came to the Arabian Peninsula via trade, so that children can know more about the history and story of the arrival of these archaeological items in Sharjah.

The families will be accompanied on a visit to Al Mahatta Museum to learn about the development of means of transportation until today, whereas and that the air transport has become the most common way for travelling. The participating families will get to see the oldest aircraft in Sharjah, known as "Um Ahmed" and learn the story behind the name. They will also get the chance to learn more about the development of aircrafts through tours in the museum galleries and viewing its precious collections.

The family amusement days for April will end with a workshop titled "New Marine Organisms" which is scheduled on 21 April, at the Sharjah Aquarium. This workshop aims to educate children about marine life and the importance of preserving the natural environment that sustains all life on the earth for future generations and thereby ensuring that all humanity can attain a healthy and enriched life.

The children will explore new marine species that have been recently added to the Aquarium to enable visitors to know these new sea species, their original habitats, and food. The participating families will conclude their amusement day with a delightful trip to Al Khan Beach where they will participate in collecting seashells and oysters to be uses in making aquariums for their children.
