The Department of Interpretation and Education at Sharjah Museums Department (SMD) has launched a series of special educational programmes on the side lines of the exhibition "Ibrahim El Salahi: A Visionary Modernist "from the Museum for African Art in New York, which was recently opened by His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasmi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, at Sharjah Art Museum, and will run through until 31 May 2012.

The special program is aimed at enhancing the community’s cultural awareness of the importance of the paintings, drawings and artworks drawn from global museums and special collections, exhibited at this first of its kind exhibition. The program gives a chance to all those involved with the arts to benefit from the experiences of prominent artists and to develop their capabilities and skills.

On Wednesday, 18 April, the Sharjah Art Museum witnessed a big response at a workshop titled "The Other Face" by renowned artist Samia Faridi, where participants were taken on a tour of the Ibrahim El Salahi exhibition to view its exemplary paintings and work featuring different art schools, such as portrait and realistic art.

During the tour, the participants viewed the masterpieces of the artist’s artworks encompassing over five decades of his career and tracing his life’s journey and the events he passed though that were manifested in his work.

Artist Samia Faridi gave a detailed presentation on the principles and basic techniques of drawing and sketching faces by using ink, colours and paintbrushes in a proper and harmonious fashion. The participants applied what they learnt during the workshop by doing their own paintings inspired by the displayed works at the exhibition.

Commenting on the event, Alya Burhaima, Director of the Department of Interpretation and Education at Sharjah Museums Department, said" the idea of organizing this program derives from our eagerness to help enhance and develop talents among members of the community."

Expressing her pride in this rich programme, Burhaima said that the department has launched a series of educational workshops to cater to the needs of all categories, including university and school students, families, children and people with special needs.

The participants expressed their gratitude and happiness at the chance to participate in this creatively designed workshop which enabled them to develop their skills and enhance their thinking while adding to their experiences by networking and exchanging experience with prominent artists, and getting an insight into other cultures.

The Department said more educational workshops would be held throughout the year with the aim of raising awareness among the public. The programs are open to everyone.
