Sharjah Museums Department Summer Camp 2012 Presents A Diverse Range Of Scientific, Educational, Artistic And Cultural Activities











As part of its ongoing efforts to provide an enriching educational and cultural environment and in line with the directives of His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, the Sharjah Museums Department (SMD) is organizing a number of summer camps that aim to develop the cognitive skills of children during their free time and stimulate their interest in science, arts and education.

Running from 20 June to 14 July, the summer camps target children aged 7 to 12 years, and will be held in the evenings with the aim of encouraging children to invest their free time in productive activities, improve their learning skills and expand their knowledge base.

The Sharjah Calligraphy Museum is involved in specially designed summer activities for children. On 20 June the museum organized a workshop titled ’Metal Decoration’ where children engaged in designing and creating their own decorative objects using Arabic Inscriptions on metal.

The camp activities include also art workshops presented by specialists at the Sharjah Art Museum, such as mask making, drawing with coloured sand, frame making and recycling, in addition to storytelling sessions at the Art Museum’s Library. The activities also include teaching children the basics of using the Internet as well as showing specially selected movies to help children enjoy watching entertaining and educational films.

The Sharjah Science Museum’s summer camp will take place from 26 June to July 12 where children will get a chance to involve in many scientific and useful workshops that aim to invest the children’s leisure time in an optimum manner. The summer camp features 15 workshops appropriate for different age groups. The workshops are on dental and health safety; discover water, the world of turtles, science, mirrors, world of chocolate, chemistry man of future, world of aviation, world of electronics, make your own perfume, anatomy, introduction into robotic science and formula one workshop in collaboration with Yas Marina Circuit.

The Sharjah Science Museum is also taking part in the summer camps by organizing summer family programs every Friday and Saturday from 22 June to 14 July, from 4-8pm. Participants in these activities will get the chance to enjoy watching the Ice Cream show, Sharjah Planetarium shows and laser light shows, as well as scientific workshops for families along with their children. These workshops include a workshop on making a painter robot where the children will be engaged in making a robot that can move, rotate and draw beautiful circle shapes. The participating children will also be involved in a workshop on making a dynamic light bulb and in another where they will make a metal detector, apart from having the chance to enjoy entertaining games like snakes and ladders, among others.

The SMD’s Department of Interpretation and Education will also organize three summer camps, one on Arabic, the second for children with special needs, and the third in English.

The camps will feature workshops, amusing games, and free painting studios, along with numerous other activities. There are a variety of workshops that cover many topics so as to educate children and enhance their mental capabilities and cognitive skills. The four-day summer program will begin on June 25 and activities will take place at Sharjah Archaeology Museum, Bait Al Naboodah, Sharjah Art Museum and Sharjah Aquarium.

The summer camp at Sharja Maritime Museum will kick off on 1 July and continue for five days. The museum will host several workshops that aim to educate children about the importance of palm tree and marine heritage and how to make the best use of sea resources in decoration and art. On 1 July, Sharjah Archaeology Museum will host the Little Archaeologist Camp which will touch on the life of writer, while Sharjah Discovery Centre’s summer camp will feature diverse workshops and programs that help children sharpen their skills and invest their capabilities in productive activities by interacting with their peers in workshops.

Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization will organize specially designed activities inspired by master designs of 19th Century Famous British Artist Owen Jones whose explorations of Islamic design contributed to the reshaping of the 19th century British design. The participating children will be involved in various art-related activities, including drawing, designing and acting.

SMD is always keen to organize educational and entertaining activities as part of its annual summer camps because it believes that museums are an integral part of society and are hub for visitors of all age groups, and therefore it is always keen to constantly make use of the diversity of its resources by organizing diverse activities in line with its key mission of delivering its message to all members of the community by combining education with entertainment.
