Al Jazeera Park closed to undergo makeover

The Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq) has announced that Al Jazeera Park is closed to the public as it is set to undergo a makeover as part of a comprehensive plan to develop the park. Shurooq, the supervisory body of the development of the park, is currently following up the final procedures for the project, and will reveal the details of the development plan in a press conference to be held soon.

The move comes in line with Shurooq’s strategy to develop the emirate of Sharjah as a whole, and tourist establishments in particular, with the aim of stimulating the tourism sector and upgrade its role in transforming the Emirate into a regional attraction center through the application of world-class specifications and standards, supported by its vast experience and the major success it achieved recently in developing Al Majaz Waterfront.

Shurooq is also capitalizing on its outstanding experience in developing and managing Al Qasba, as well as in supervising numerous giant projects, such as the Heart of Sharjah project, the Chedi Khorfakkan Resort, and the Kalba Eco-Tourism project, among others.

Speaking on the occasion, H.E Sheikha Bodour Bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairperson of Shurooq, said, "Shurooq will soon embark on a new initiative to push ahead with its plans to develop the Emirate’s various amenities and achieve sustainable economic, social and environmental development in line with the ongoing directives and unlimited support of His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, to make every possible effort and overcome all obstacles that hinder achieving our goals."

She added, "We will soon announce the development plan for Al Jazeera Park after completing the final touches to the strategy and time schedule in preparation to begin construction work. We are confident that the project will add significantly to the already extensive list of the Emirate’s attractions that truly makes Sharjah the cultural capital of the Arab world.

H.E Marwan Bin Jassim Al Sarkal, CEO of Shurooq, said,: "Shurooq is still savoring the great success the Al Majaz Waterfront has achieved and the huge public turnout it has received, and hence we believe that the development of Al Jazeera Park is timely, especially in view of the park’s growing needs for development so as to meet the demands of visitors and tourists."

He said Sharjah has a tradition of producing attractions that live up to its status as a tourist destination that combine various cultures and arts. The park will be a regional competitive tourist attraction and an important destination that will richly enhance Sharjah’s cap of tourist landmarks.

Al Sarkal pointed out that the development of the park, supervised by Shurooq, will be in cooperation with the Sharjah Municipality, the Department of Public Works, the Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority, and a number of other government and private bodies.

Al Jazeera Park, one of the Emirate’s premier tourist destinations, covers an area of 13,000 square meters and is situated on an island within Khalid Lagoon opposite Sharjah Ventral Market. It was first opened to the public on 21 October 1979, and 35 years after its opening, the Park will undergo makeover as part of a comprehensive development plan due to its huge popularity and its distinguished location.

Shurooq was established in 2009 with the aim of achieving social, cultural, environmental and economic development on the basis of Sharjah’s distinct Arab and Islamic identity, so as to encourage investment by adopting the best international standards in providing quality services that help attract investors from the region and the world. The Authority’s main mission is to provide the required facilities and incentives, evaluate investment related infrastructure projects, lay down the necessary plans to complete such projects and to overcome obstacles facing investment activities in the Emirate.
